Dragon Age - Discussion Thread

The Keep is kinda funny in that I'm scratching my head trying to recall what choices I made in DA2. I remember almost nothing except a few major decisions. Literally a forgettable game, so I'll just go with some random choices. Otoh I recall even the minor choices in DA:O even though it's been years since I last played that game.

Adam Smith's Wot I Think on RPS is a glowing endorsement of DA:I.

Yeah, the reviews seem overwhelmingly positive so far. The only concern I have is that there's apparently some problems with nvidia cards and some reported import bugs (wasn't the Keep suppose to prevent that?!)
Hopefully there'll be a patch and a driver update out by the time it's released over here on Friday.

I swore I'd never buy another Bioware game at launch, but all the positive buzz convinced me to download DAI. I've only played the prologue so far, but I'm really enjoying myself. The only complaint I have is that your character doesn't automatically run up to an enemy or lootable item when you click on it. You have to use W and do it manually. This is really annoying when you are in an big fight and surrounded by mobs. On the plus side, the game looks beautiful on my Radeon 7950 on high settings at 1080p.

^Does the loot vanish after a while? If not, why not wait 'til the fight is over before gathering everything?

For those with Nvidia cards like myself, the latest driver release includes optimisation for DAI. Word is it appears to solve the frame rate stability issues, however I read that the cinematics are intentionally locked at 30fps. Apparently there was some trouble with the voice tracks sliding out of sync due to variable frame rates. Not a big deal IMO, so long as the performance in combat is nice & smooth.

I just upgraded from an old GTS 250 to a GTX 760. Hell of a leap in capabilities, but even so, I doubt it'll run well on ultra. I typically turn a few memory hungry settings down in favour of stable frames. Motion blur is an easy one to loose since I've never liked the look of it and the difference between "ultra" AA settings and "medium to high" isn't all that significant, at least not with my eyesight. ;)

Curious if the console version behaves in the same way...

Yeah, that's what I've been doing. The looting problem isn't nearly as a bad as combat. One of the things I've noticed is that enemies like to run out of melee range while you are fighting them, forcing you to keep pressing W otherwise you'll just swing your sword at the air. I'm sure it isn't a problem for ranged classes but for melee it's extremely tedious.

Well, I got a new PC a couple of months ago, so obviously I had to go with that version so as to test out my new rig. :D

I'm rather enjoying it so far. It's awesome being able to play a Qunari character for a change. The combat is very similar to DA2's. The tactical camera is there, but to be honest I don't use it much. It's far too close to the ground (compared to DAO's camera) to be very useful, IMO. The writers did a great job of really throwing you into the fire early on. To be honest the first hour felt grander and more epic than anything that happened in DA2.

The graphics are excellent, and everything (so far) is very slick and smooth. They weren't kidding about the massive environments, either. I'm over four hours in and I still haven't finished doing everything in the game's first area.

Is it "Skyrim big" or is it at least bigger and more open than DA2 (which, IMO, was horribly repetitive and restrictive)?

Don' think of it as "Skyrim-big" in the sense that it's more vast, open areas/regions rather than one landmass (when we're talking Skyrim sans addons). But yeah, it's quite sprawling. DA2 doesn't even factor into comparisons, and even DA:O's more open spaces feel very constrictive put side-by-side with DA:I.

^^^ Either way, sounds like a decent improvement over the previous versions. One of the bigger complaints I frequently heard about Skyrim was that it was too big and sprawling - so much so that it became boring to many. I personally never shared that sentiment as I always loved the "open world" concept and hated being so restricted and linear in other games. It's good that DA:I is at least bigger than before, but still at a manageable level without getting boring - sounds like a good compromise.

On console, you can't click to access loot (that I've discovered, anyways), so moving up to the loot and pressing A/X is your only option. Same as the last two games.

I'm a mage, so I don't need to run up to enemies - can't speak to whether or not combat is the same way. ;)

Yeah, well, these people don't know what they're talking about ;) Also, they apparently never played Daggerfall.

But yeah, if you enjoyed that aspect of Skyrim, you will definitely enjoy DA:I's open world.

I only discovered it relatively recently, but in DA2 you can press 'R' and you'll automatically walk to and open the nearest loot source (bodies and chests alike.) Very handy for clearing up after a fight. I assumed it was a holdover from the console controls. Who knows, maybe they kept it for DAI?

BTW, looks like the people at amazon didn't bother to change their email template. I just got the code for the weapons pack pre-order bonus and the instructions are telling me I need a valid *Steam* account to redeem it. That's bound to cause a little confusion. ;)

What I'm wondering is that if I enter that code into Origin right now, will it unlock DAI for pre-loading, or will it actually mess things up? Hmm...

Playing it makes me want to upgrade everything and to be fair I'm due for it as my computer is coming on 4 years old (and even back then it was high-mid range only). I thought I was going to have problems because the opening cutscenes seemed jerky, though it wasn't so when I was playing. Had a look and it seems to be due to the cutscenes being locked at a lower framerate. It was very noticeable, but I'm starting to get used to it.

Had one CTD after the boss in the tutorial section, which meant I had to do the fight again. But apart from that no problems.

Actually the only problem is I don't like my character's face anymore. I kind of rushed it and am regretting it, so I'm likely to start again and re-roll. However, I now need to sleep so that can wait until later.

Got the shipping notice yesterday from Amazon and against better judgement hoped it would already be in my mailbox today :(

Anyway, i've cancelled all appointments for the rest of the week, will probably even not attend a local gaming convention on the weekend just so i can blow through this game :lol:

My first PS4 optimized game (and i'm really curious if the videos do it justice, so far i've only gad glimpses of the true PS4 potential)! I'm really excited!

Just got that email myself. The game isn't on the way yet though. I'm probably going to wait for the disk rather than try and pre-load it though

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Even if it works, it's a 20GB download and with my internet speeds the post will probably be faster. ;)
