Spoilers Doom Patrol - DC Universe Series

^^ Actually, I like it.

So* it looks like Crowley is in Doom Patrol. One more reason to buy it.

* But "so" may be one of the most hated words on the planet. :rommie:

^ Actually, "so" is OK cuz it's often someone running with your ideas/comments whereas you know an "actually" someone is coming to set the record straight for you. :)

If I don't subscribe to DC Universe, then this is pretty much a guaranteed buy just based on the reactions around here, and the bits and pieces I've seen in trailers and clips.

These days it seems like people, youngsters in particular, can't begin a conversation without "so." I pick up the phone and say "hello" and I hear "So...." :rommie:

Thing I noticed a while back is that A LOT of the heroes and Villains surrounding (the earlier) versions of the Doom Patrol are all about seeking or finding Immortality.

Cyborg... Seeking Immortality.

Robotman... Found Immortality.

NIles Caulder... He looks the same since the 1950s, so he's found immortality?

Beastboy?... If Garfield can morph enough to ignore ageing, then he's seeking immortality?

Rita Farr... Immortal.

Negative man... Because of the burns, It's hard to tell that Larry is not a withered Centenarian, but I'm betting that he's still superficially 40 underneath all those scars.

Crazy Jane... Immortal.

Are Cyborg and Beast Boy seeking immortality? Do you mean heading towards?

Robotman's body is immortal, I'm not sure about his brain. Rita's not exactly human at this point. Larry and Jane's may be related to their abilities. It is a question that the show has ignored so far and one would have to think willfully. It hasn't been coy about showing the characters in other eras but never brings attention to the fact.

The Doom Patrol does have a history in the comics with the chief working with life extension as seen in the plots with General Immortus. However, I have not read far enough or researched whether the chief was ever successful in these endeavors but it's not completely out-of-the-blue.

Finally getting access to this show this week on Space in Canada (where DSC is broadcast). A bit weird to have this on Space and Titans on Netflix, but the same split is happening in Arrowverse shows with Showcase offering Supergirl, Netflix offering The Flash and Space with Arrow and Legends. A bit annoying as Netflix episodes, unlike the other shows, are not simultaneously available. But eh, first world problems...

At least you don't have any crossovers (yet) to worry about figuring the scheduling out here... ;)

Just watched the latest episode, and I was ready to write how this episode was fantastic and showed how even a comparatively "quiet" episode that doesn't move the overarching plot by much, and where nothing really particularly weird happens still works just on the strength of these characters... and then the ending happened... and somehow made it even better. :techman:

Removing the chief early on has really paid dividends in propelling the story of the characters having to find acceptance of themselves. The core cast, as is the case with the golden age comics, have a collection of wondrous yet freaky powers that makes their journey relatable despite how fantastic the circumstances. I don't know the modern comic version of Doom Patrol but the changes made from the golden age work to play that up. Robotman is strong and powerful but trapped in a metal shell. Rita is malleable but perhaps not even human at this point. Negative man is a powerful entity that Larry houses but can't even truly experience not to mention he's disfigured and radioactive. Jane is 64 different damaged personalities. There's no 6'4 beautiful men of steel here, these people couldn't easily blend into society even if they wanted so they have to find the answers within.

Keeping with that theme we get the story of Danny the Street, a sentient genderqueer stretch of road where a group of misfits have found a place for themselves. Danny is also searching for the chief as well and with the Doom Patrol find they each might just have what it takes to help each other. Danny provides Cyborg and Larry with some help accepting themselves and they help Danny stand up and find the courage to face the forces of conformity head-on.

The other plot has Jane slipping into a broken personality trying to escape reality by forcing a storybook relationship that doesn't really exist. This illustrates what can happen when that journey falters and people can't find their answers. It's interesting to see the way the storylines play against each other.

Among all this though I think my favorite moment is seeing Cliff get into a robot dance battle with a boy in a cardboard robot costume who it's easy to imagine must be a bit of misfit himself. Good thing Cliff's seen Flashdance 87 times.

Did I mention the fabulous musical moment?

I don’t watch the show but I heard about the musical number and watched it on YouTube. It’s always lovely to hear Matt Bomer singing!

I found it weird when my beautiful wife, told me that Matt was singing Kelly Clarkson.

Larry is over a century old, how the heck does he have his thumb on the pulse of popular contemporary country disco music?

I'd be fine with it being artistic license but to play devil's advocate for a minute I think Larry would be closer to 80 and I'm pretty sure my 70+ parents know who Kelly Clarkson is who has been around for more than 15 years on the charts, radio and TV. That the particular song would be meaningful for multiple reasons to the character only doesn't hurt.

Okay, I absolutely loved Danny the Street. :)

Also, Diane Guerrero should win like a bunch of awards.

This series is interesting, it can be absurd, yet doesn't fall into the trap of never taking itself seriously or becoming excessively obtuse. Sometimes it has big superheroics and sometimes it can be introspective.

The journey into the underground of Jane's mind and the unfortunate source of her condition were perhaps a bit of well-worn territory but still done well. It was nice to be able to see Brendan Fraser be Cliff in the flesh but I missed having the ensemble around. I liked seeing Cliff make headway despite his well-intentioned awkwardness and the negative spirit continues to be an interesting character. I don't know about Morrison's run but in the early Doom Patrol comics it basically just follows Larry's bidding, it has much more agency here (even if perhaps just a convenient plot device in this one).

Last week made me retch and now this week makes me well up. This show really defies easy categorization, it doesn't doggedly follow any one story type from week to week and is as much a character study as anything.

Beware the recap if you have a weak stomach!

Also, I wonder if that swamp is part of the work they've done for Swamp Thing?

Another solid episode (Cyborg Patrol). In these times, with everything being so topsy-turvy do enjoy watching the freaks take on the twisted Bureau of Normalcy. What a tragic story for Cyborg, I don't know what the big picture hopes were for Cyborg in the larger DC cinematic universe but they've done a really job getting him to work within the parameters of Doom Patrol, a story of broken freaks finding themselves and making their place in the world. If I'm being honest, the plot was somewhat pedestrian if you step back from it but it's hard to notice because the character work is so compelling.
