Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

I'm thinking landscape wallpaper - except animated. Like back projection of a film taken some beautiful place. Mountain, beach, canyon, whatever. Just enough movement to make it seem more like a window into that place instead of a static picture. And not all Earth either; throw in some Vulcan, some Andor, some Tellar. Hell, Risa if they've found it yet. Places in the Federation you would want to visit if you weren't on duty.
A good idea, but a tall order to generate all those.

But gives me an idea. A looping video of the water at sea perhaps?

This has always been one of my favorite shots. The iridescent look of the plating is just beautiful.

@Donny I forget if you ever did a shot recreating this angle?

Somewhat, but without the specific lighting:

Hey, @Donny. I had a wild idea the other night. Have you ever thought of creating models for Starfleet Headquarters or the Starfleet Academy campus in San Francisco? The geography always seems to change every time we see it on the movies and the various TV series, and I was wondering if it would be possible to create a sort of amalgamation of we saw over the years.

I'm sure it'd be another MASSIVE project, but I love the idea of being able to explore the explore that Academy campus and see how the various buildings relate to each other.

I have had many a night where I can't sleep thinking about visualizing a Starfleet Headquarters either in the TOS or TWOK era. But, like you said, it's a massive undertaking. As much as I'd like to tackle it, I have too many irons in the fire currently. However, this project would give me a lot of experience doing outdoor scenes with lots of foliage, buildings, terrain, etc, which I admit I'm lacking in. So, it's on my list of things I'd like to do. I just don't know when I'm going to do it.

Well, I'm glad that it was something you'd already thought of. And it's cool to hear that it's at least a possibility! :techman:

And to be clear, I only meant the exteriors of the buildings, not interior & exterior layouts for each one. I was mainly interested in getting a feel for how each building relates to each other in-universe. (Although, considering that the tram station at the beginning of TMP was open air, I guess you'd have to model at least a little of the interior of that one. :))

I don't remember where I read it, Star Trek the Magazine most likely, but I read somewhere that Starfleet Command/Academy is supposed to be located where the Presidio is today. The backstory being that Starfleet basically took over the sight and made whatever changes they needed to to suit their needs. If the orientation re: San Francisco changes around, it's likely because some of the effects artists don't know the layout of the city, and where the Presidio is located.

Or they knew, but they just did whatever made for the best shot. Remember, these matte & digital artists were working on deadline & knew that the majority of their audience wouldn't know or care if they didn't get the layout of San Francisco exactly right, as long as the shot looked cool.

Or because they got a better visual by taking intentional poetic license. In The Voyage Home, they actually filmed in San Francisco and thus had to know where things were, but they still shot the scene of Gillian picking up Kirk and Spock in Sausalito on the San Francisco side of the bridge, no doubt due to availability or suitability of locations outweighing strict accuracy.

I'm pretty sure the impulse engines were lit by the same blue-white neon as was the bulk of the model. There are test photos of the ship with the impulse engines glowing blue. Each shot of the ship in TMP was made of multiple identical repeated camera passes to expose different things at different exposures, like...
  • Matte pass
  • Beauty light pass
  • Porthole light pass
  • Running light pass
  • etc.
This meant you could change the color of any glowing element by shooting through color or effect filters or alter things in the optical printer. So if you want the crystal to glow blue you mask it off during the pass where you shoot the impulse engines, as in that TWOK example. In TMP they probably shot the impulse engines and crystal as a single pass so any color applied to one applied to the other.

Now it IS possible they could have shoved some red gels into the impulse engine assembly, but I've never heard anyone mention this who worked on/with the model.

When they had to rewire the ship for Star Trek 6 (the power umbilical had been hacked off) they changed the lighting so they could shoot more elements in a single pass which meant fewer camera passes and less compositing work, but with the downside that you have less control over each element which is I suspect why the ship looks flatter and less interesting in that film than 2, 3 and 4.

That actually makes perfect sense - I think they did do it that way. Would explain why the impulse engines somehow changed to more of a white color in TFF with such 2nd rate effects - they probably just filmed it as those lights actually appeared on the model without doing multiple passes. Or if they did multiple passes they probably didn’t use any gels or special color timing to change the color.

Spent the day getting the "bar" area modeled, which serves as the entry foyer to the VIP lounge. We get a glimpse of this area in TMP:

A couple things to note: there are unmarked, nondescript cylinders (which appear to be a dark grey metal?) of different diameters and heights adorning the shelves behind the "bar". We can assume these cylinders contain various beverages and spirits to be served to the officers that visit the lounge. The shelves themselves seem to be covered by glass-pane doors. The bar top is a table that I believe first appeared here, but later went on to be part of the sickbay set in TWOK (in the service corridor that runs behind McCoy's office) and lived for many years in the sickbay set of TNG.

Now, I think it's pretty silly and cheap to have all the alcohol/beverages/spirits in these non-descript cylinders, but this may be a blessing in disguise because it does save me a TON of time I'd otherwise have to spend modeling various exotic liquor bottles; at least enough unique variants to fill the shelves without them repeating too much. And, quite frankly, I'd rather spend my time and resources elsewhere. So I'm sticking to these grey cylinders instead of carving out a week or so to model liquor bottles. I could use the six or seven bottles I modeled for my TOS project, but those just look silly here and there aren't enough variants to fill the shelves. So, for now at least, I'm sticking to these cylinders, even in my TWOK version.

Otherwise, today I re-modeled some of the props that will decorate the TWOK lounge, including:
- A light sconce we first see in TSFS at the Starfleet HQ lounge Kirk meets Morrow in, which I think fits in quite nicely here. I've placed the sconce liberally around the lounge, but may remove a few of them by the times this is through. Depends on how many "nautical" props I get modeled.
- A large UFP / Enterprise Seal to greet those entering the lounge's bar/foyer. I've included a smaller version in the lounge proper but will probably replace it later with something more nautical looking. I created a clean image of that graphic this time around, and greatly enhanced the material.
- Framed paintings of sailing ships. I'm actually not quite sure what I think about them. I dig the wood paneling and the color scheme of the lounge, but adding in the "nautical" memorabilia is kind of throwing me off. Thoughts?

And here you can see the drop-down viewscreen walls in both their up and down positions from this view. Notice I've added a metal track for the drop-down walls to follow this time around.

Oh, come on! Don't just leave it with the bland, nondescript bottles! That shelf is CRYING OUT for the big Kentucky Bourbon Company/Saurian Brandy decanter from "The Enemy Within", man! Or McCoy's bottle of Romulan Ale from TWOK! Anything! ;)

Seriously, it's startling how much more inviting and lived in the TWOK version of the lounge feels. Very nicely done, sir!
The round UFP emblem looks distorted in this screencap, Donny. Is that an artifact of how you shoot the screencaps? Some kind of fisheye lens effect, maybe?

But if I make one I'll have to make MOAR!

Thank you!

Yeah, that's some distortion. The closer things get to the sides of the screen, the more distorted they appear, especially from a 90 degree first-person FOV in which I took that renders. I usually shoot in 60 degree FOV which alleviates that somewhat.
