Donny’s Late TOS Movie Era Interiors

Because Ghostbusters is actually in the Search for Spock / Temple of Doom / Buckaroo Banzai era?

Donny's got it. Because I want to see them cleaning out an old Constitution-class starship before its refit.

Sorry I wasn't more clear.

Donny, have you figured out what an ideal Engine Room would look like in the latter Kirk era of the Enterprise?
Not yet. I'll cross that bridge when and if I get around to tackling my idealized version of the TUC engine room. However, I'll probably keep the layout of the engine room the same, just swap out the warp core for an intermix chamber that looks more era appropriate. A cross between what we see in TMP and TNG.

Decided to take a quick break from the bridge display screens and work on an era-appropriate prop that I could finish in a few days. Here's a WIP:

The thought of modeling this guy has always intimidated me but I've also always wanted to, so here we go! Still gotta get the nozzle, clip, and the trigger and switches on the side modeled, of course. I'm using my Master Replicas Assault Phaser as a guide.

Nice! I think I have the Playmates toy somewhere - it was kid-sized but still one of their better replicas. The only problem was the battery clip tended to fall out when you so much as looked at it.

That phaser always rubbed me the wrong way. I'm sure now it's because of any number of biases. It's certainly a well made and solid looking prop.

It's definitely the most lethal looking Starfleet phaser we've ever seen, probably because it shares design elements of modern day firearms. It's also a little over-designed compared to the simpler lines, shapes, and details of the phasers that came before and after. However, as a kid, when I first saw "The Undiscovered Country", it just looked "bad-ass". I gladly plopped down a pretty penny at my second STLV for a Master Replicas copy when I saw it, and I can't say I regret it. It's got a removable clip, removable "mini-phaser", lights and sound, and is made of metal and has a real weight to it. It's such a well-constructed, stylish replica that I'm glad to have in my collection.

IIRC, it was actually designed by Shatner’s direction in TFF. He wanted something that looked specifically like a real firearm, as opposed to the earlier designs that he felt were too toy-like. I may be misremembering details, but they definitely first appeared in TFF in the shuttle, when the Nimbus assault party were getting ready to land. Sulu also used one to take out one of the Paradise City spotlights.

BTW, I believe it used actual components from the Beretta M92S, particularly parts of the grip and frame, main safety, slide release and take-down release.

And it continues....

Another batch of back-lit displays. Keep in mind that while some of these are re-colored copies of another, I'm also generating a red alert version for each, and most of these have some kind of animation I'm building into them as well. And the animations vary, even between the re-colored copies. I'm aiming to be as exhaustively researched and complete as possible!

Here's an example of how they're looking in-game:

Still a LOT more to go.....

That is looking really nice man :) Are you just creating them in Illustrator? Sounds like a lot of work. I'll need some for my ships. Not looking forward to it.

I've got most of the modeling of the Assault Phaser done, so I can move on to texturing it this weekend. Note that both the vent holes on the cowling top and sides and the circular grip indentations will be simulated via texture so I haven't modeled them.

I'm building some functionality into it, so the clip is removable and the upper cowling slides forward to reveal the mini-phaser hooked into the main unit. I took some artistic liberty with the inside since I don't have any reference for the interior of the screen-used prop, and the Master Replica is pretty bare-bones inside (leading me to believe the screen-used was as well). So I imagined a way for the mini-phaser to connect to the larger unit.

For the following shots I've removed the cowling so you can see the interior of the phaser better.
