Don Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard in "Iron Man 2"

I don't even know why Favreau went with Howard. I mean I haven't really seen him in anything that he was particularly good in. He was all right in Crash and he did exactly what was required of him in Iron Man. I actually think this is a similar case with The Dark Knight where re-casting should be considered a good thing -- I think Don Cheadle is lightyears a better actor.

Yeah, Howard's girly-voice bugged me too. Cheadle is indeed a great actor, but doesn't have the physicality to be War Machine.

If we're lucky, he'll be in the CGI suit for the whole film.

In terms of pure physical likeness I always thought Mario Van Peebles would have been a good Rhodey. What can I say, I'm a fan of Heartbreak Ridge.

While Howard was good in the role, he hardly knocked me over the head with his utter coolness. I like Cheadle and look forward to his take on the character.

Howard's voice was very distracting and was anything but strong or charismatic enough to be comparable to Robert Downey Jr.'s. Certainly didn't seem commanding enough to be in the military, let alone such an apparently powerfully placed role in the military.

Cheadle does seem an odd replacement, but I'm glad they're replacing Howard nontheless. He honestly came across as weak, both physically and mentally, every time he was on the screen.

I'm forced to agree with you on this. He's not a bad actor but I just don't think he was right for that part.
I agree too.

I like Howard but Cheadle always gives a strong performance. I actually think he's believable in the military more than Howard.

I guess Howard and his agents asked for too much money.

In unrelated news, Katie Holmes, Terrence Howard, Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Thomas Jane and Billy Dee Williams have been cast as the new Justice League.
So Jennifer Connelly has another shot at becoming GBOW! :techman:

On topic, did Terrence Howard get greedy? Just askin'...

Did Howard get greedy? That was going to be my question as well.

I can't say I'm swayed one way or the other but Howard had the broader shoulders that Rhodey in the comics had. However, is voice was on the softer side.

I look at this as not to dissimilar from recasting Katie Homes. Its a supporting role that sure having the consistency would have been nice its not bad either.

RDJ and Favreau are reallly the only non-replaceables. I could even live with Gweneth being recast, hope she isn't. Just saying.

I heard Thomas Jane opted not to do the JL movie and was replaced by Neal McDonough.

Howard looked the part to me because of his build. Cheadle seems scrawny compared to howard
^This.

And in regards to the recast: DO NOT WANT. Cheadle is an amazing talent, but Terrence won me over. Iron Man 2 just got TDK disease and started recasting actors. Marvel, stop breaking continuity!! :klingon:

Yeah. Because Marvel doesn't want what happened with TDK. No, sir.

I think Iron Man 2 will be fine even with the recast.

Did you read the article?

It said "finanical difficulty", which means Marvel & Howards agents couldn't agree on an amount of payment going forward. It has nothing to do with Marvel breaking continuity on purpose. It just means both sides couldn't negotiate a deal.

Plus someone would have to die and we don't want that either. ;)

"Next time baby"

MARVEL DISCLAIMER pops up on screen

Announcer- by next time this means a contractual obligation to appear in any future marvel features and stipulates that Mr Howard will receive a specified amount of money for his contributions to Marvel. Failure to do so will result is breach of contract and penalty under California acting law paragraph 6 page 10.

;)

Not sure what to think about this since I like both actors...I thought that Terrance Howard brought a lot of humor to Rhodes as well as a serious side that Tony was able to provoke constantly. I'm sure though that having Don Cheadle won't change that much though...

Add me to the group disappointed that Don Cheadle will be replacing Terrence Howard.
I have nothing against Cheadle but as others have said, Terrence Howard is more suited for the role.

Yeah. Because Marvel doesn't want what happened with TDK. No, sir.

A 2.5 hour movie that was over hyped because of a deceased co-star?
Like "The Crow"?

Interesting, what would be the excuse for both films if both actors had lived while still giving performances above and beyond most peoples expectations? It also doesn't answer the question of repeated viewings or it being sold out in the more costly IMAX 2 months after the films premiere during an economic recession.

Sorry but Heath Ledger being dead doesn't answer why people would spend $15 or more repeatedly if there weren't other elements to the film to make an audience spend that type of money more than once. Curiosity about his preformance would have been met upon the first viewing.

Based on ex-Pensive's avatar, can't RDJ just play War Machine as well?

That or can't we have a CG enhanced Avery Brooks play Rhodie? C'mon that is GOLD! (well silver at least).

I concur.

Both Brandon Lee and Heath Ledger's performances have been praised long after their passing in their respective final films. In contrast, Aaliyah's Queen of the Damned was a terrible film, and no amount of acting could have saved it.
