I think it's bizarre how harshly the design is dismissed by a lot of people here. The thing is georgeous, sexy, and definitely eye candy in the eyes of me and others. I think it's much better looking and more interesting to look at than any other Federation ships I can think of. The basic design of most don't make sense and look really awkward. This one just looks right and I want to gently caress it (and hopefully not get a cut from the sharp edges).

Did it ever occur to you that some of us may like the Discovery not because it is "beautiful" but because it has character and because it takes design cues from Trek's history?

Yes, so agreed. How does that affect what I've written?
If we are in agreement then it doesn't.

How will you feel if the creators admit to making it fugly on purpose?
I would feel good because it would serve a purpose story-wise. Design is also a big part of storytelling. Good design immediately tells you many things without an actor talking or one page of script. (And good design does not equal beautiful ship.)

Yes, Captain, "others" do say it's gorgeous, a synonym of beautiful.
I never doubted it. Some find the Discovery gorgeous, some simply like it, some find it ok with or without modifications and others find it hideous.

I like it a lot. I wasn't a fan of the original design from the McQuarrie/Adam sketches but they improved the design a lot. I think it's great to see that design actually made official.

I agree, I think its how it was done here. We do not have a single flat triangle, we have a delta wing. With a main body and sweeping sides, its defined.

I also agree. I don't like that old design at all but I like this.

I'm late to the party here but I think the design of Discovery looks terrific. It's just the CGI model they showed us that is crap. They shouldn't have done that ugly, textureless mockup. They could just have shown some concept art or something instead and people would have been very happy. You live and learn though.
It was concept art. And judging from past experience, there's no way fans would have been happy, no matter what the teaser was. :techman:

ScreenRant has published an article about the "mixed" reaction to the Discovery:
http://screenrant.com/star-trek-discovery-ship-design/

In typical ScreenRant fashion, the article is overly long because their contributors seem to get paid by the word, so each article is from a frustrated novelist trying to make money. The author doesn't appear to try to whitewash critical reaction, as ScreenRant too often does as if it were in someone's pocket, but they do still try to mitigate the damage by the end of the article. Moderation of opinion annoys me when I don't think it is deserved, but that's just me. People who (inexplicably) love the ship will feel better for said moderate tone.

First, it has to be borne in mind that the hero shot in the trailer was taken from the most unflattering angle possible.
I've been thinking more about why the trailer maker chose that angle. I think it was because they wanted to convey a sense of awesome size. After all, the delta seems to contain the same volume as the saucer, so the ship's capacity must be huge.
I've also come to agree that this looks like a deliberate combination of Klingon and Federation technology.
Why would they come together to build such a big strange ship? My guess is it had to be self-sufficient, either for a really long deep space mission (no periodic rest stops at Federation outposts), or as an Ark in space for some sort of rescue mission.

Will the show actually follow this hybrid Klingon/Federation crew? My guess is no. I think Fuller will steer clear of heavy use of Klingons, as the Berman era pretty much mined that "blood and honour" vein dry.
The shape of the ship indicates the Klingons will have a presence, but I think it will be more like in the JJ movies - i.e. they will be mysterious and dangerous, feared and rarely seen. A good thing.

It's funny that you mention both the Serenity and the Millennium Falcon because objectively both ships are in fact ugly as sin!
I don't think I ever thought the Falcon was ugly. It's essentially a disc, which is a good shape, with an adjustable wrench jaw at the front, which gives it direction and a bit of attitude. The busy surface texture was preceeded by ships and tech in Space Odyssey and Silent Running. The cockpit is from a classic WWII bomber. The only oddity is the cockpit being skewed to one side.

Nice review. Agreed.

There are aspects of the Falcon that I see in the asymmetric areas of the spacecraft from Alien and Prometheus.

I agree with the Alien influence. I think a lot of spaceship designers on subsequent movies wanted to produce their own Falcon, which they wouldn't do if it was genuinely unattractive.

Serenity, on the other hand, is a misshapen lump. But it's a misshapen lump with heart!

I knew that as soon as I mentioned the Falcon some Star Wars nut would take offense (just joking). There's no such thing as "universally". The Millennium Falcon is a classic sci-fi design but an unattractive design nevertheless.
1. It's not essentially a disc but a stubby cylinder. Like a fat burger. (I like burgers).
2. I don't know about you but I don't find wrench jaws particularly attractive. But they get the job done.
3. WWII bomber cockpit equals outdated, obsolete technology.
4. Asymmetric = misshapen.
My point is that the Falcon isn't beautiful because it wasn't designed to be beautiful because in the script it wasn't supposed to be beautiful and fancy.
Luke Skywalker: [on first seeing the Millennium Falcon] What a piece of junk!
[the Millennium Falcon, under siege, won't start] Princess Leia: [sarcastic] Would it help if I got out and pushed?
Rey: That one's garbage. [ship blows up]. Finn: The garbage will do. [shows Millennium Falcon].

Maybe the Discovery has a reason for its appearance too. Like, I don't know, it's set pre-TOS???

Both the Nostromo and the Prometheus are symmetrical.

But the Nostromo is also a space truck. And like I said, the Falcon is an iconic design.

Serenity, on the other hand, is a misshapen lump. But it's a misshapen lump with heart!
So is the Falcon. A misshapen lump with heart! And that's why we love them both! And we're gonna love the Discovery too!

I wasn't talking about either of those ships, nor the Narcissus, because none of those appeared in both films I mentioned (Alien and Prometheus). I should have been more specific: There are aspects of the Falcon that I see in the asymmetric areas of the alien spacecraft from Alien and Prometheus.

You mean the alien derelict ship aka Leviathan.

Sure, it looks just like the Falcon. :shifty:

"The Millennium Falcon is ugly."

TBBS has officially jumped the shark.

You should have used the phrase "TBBS has officially nuked the fridge" because George Lucas himself described the Falcon as "a hamburger with an olive on the side".

P.S.: Ridley Scott was calling the alien derelict "the croissant"! :guffaw:

I wouldn't call it gorgeous by any stretch of the imagination, but since the options were limited I did vote for it as such. I liked it, it feels like real Trek belonging in the proper timeline (that's apparently called the Prime timeline now). I just hope they will tweak the design a bit.
