It doesn't look bad, but not all that appealing. But then not all ships in Starfleet looked as good as the Enterprise (any of them!)
I will have to agree, it looks a lot more like a Klingon Battleship then anything I've seen in Starfleet. Maybe it was done intentionally?

The biggest problem of the Discovery is that it isn't good looking. Period. The hero ship that identifies the series should be good looking. That doesn't have anything to do with the basic Ken Adam/McQuarrie shape. It's the execution of said shape that is botched.

Hell even the "Firefly" looked sexy as hell! And that was supposed to be an old piece of junk. Like the millenium falcon.

There is no excuse the 'Discovery' looks as bad as it does, with the exemption of "it's not finished yet and we will fix that" (at which they hinted at, but actually makes the marketing look foolish, first impressions and all that).

I love the look of the Discovery, but I refuse to watch the show, regardless of how good it may be, solely because of how bad this poll is! /s

It's funny that you mention both the Serenity and the Millennium Falcon because objectively both ships are in fact ugly as sin! The first looks like a fat bug or a wingless bird and the second is an asymmetric lopsided hamburger. But after awhile they became beautiful in our eyes! Why? Because we became emotionally invested in them, in their beloved crew and in their adventures. I bet that will happen with the Discovery also if we give it time and will give it a chance.

I love how some people seem to be treating it as a universally accepted fact that the ship is ugly, when there are already posts, including my own, and the results of the poll showing that this is clearly not the case.

The use of "clearly" is at odds with the variety of opinion, weighted mostly towards the fugly end.

I'm looking forward to the revelation from the creators that it was made fugly on purpose. The people who like it for its beauty will win the Emperors Clothes Award.

I agree with these comments:

1. The vessel was likely intended (in universe) as a work horse

2. The fugly aspect is likely intentional

3. We may eventually become emotionally invested in this ship

I suspect that, in universe, both ship and crew will be portrayed as under dogs.

Again, the poll was clearly weighted in that direction to begin with. And the split is still roughly 40/60 in favor of "slightly unappealing." Even if the 40% who think it's "gorgeous" are a minority, they're a quite a sizeable one.

Didn't vote, because options are limited - but I find the Discovery intriguing at best. Due to the rough / quickly rustled up render of it (seen in teaser) I'm on the fence as to whether I like it or not...

No, it isn't. It quite literally 'clearly' is not true that the design is universally accepted as ugly. You may think anyone who likes this design is crazy, but that doesn't mean they don't exist (or aren't a very large percentage of fans, as this poll already indicates).

Did it ever occur to you that some of us may like the Discovery not because it is "beautiful" but because it has character and because it takes design cues from Trek's rich history? No? I thought so.

It's SOP for fans to dismiss, condemn, yea brother, even declare the death of Trek, based on as little information as possible.

That goes for both ways. "Problem" is: You cant release teaser material and then expect people to NOT have opinions about it. Because teasers are there to build a (hopefully) positive "prejudice" about a show, so they tune in. Of course that can backfire.

The problem with the Akiraprise was never that it was based on a rejected design that the fans had seen before. It was exactly the opposite. The problem was that Rick Berman and Brannon Braga wanted the "cool", "good looking" and "sexy" starship Akira (from 2373) to star in a series set in 2151!!!

In-universe you could explain that with the Akira beeing an updated NX-01 design from Starfleet as an homage to the old NX. Historicism in design is nothing new.

BTW this was a concept for the NX-01:

Remind you of anyone!? ;)

I see. So Starfleet is like a car company which makes retro models like the new Camaro to attract buyers. Smart!

This is a fan's concept. This has nothing to do with the NX-01's pre-production whatsoever. Clearly it is also inspired by the Ralph McQuarrie/Planet of the Titans Enterprise.

Bernd Schneider is 100% correct! Great points all of them!!!

Who said "universally?"

Yes, so agreed. How does that affect what I've written?

I am on two minds regarding this new ship. I do recognize it as Starfleet, but not as a ship I would base the show on. It is passable as a background prop, nothing more

I think it's bizarre how harshly the design is dismissed by a lot of people here. The thing is georgeous, sexy, and definitely eye candy in the eyes of me and others. I think it's much better looking and more interesting to look at than any other Federation ships I can think of. The basic design of most don't make sense and look really awkward. This one just looks right and I want to gently caress it (and hopefully not get a cut from the sharp edges).

I'm late to the party here but I think the design of Discovery looks terrific. It's just the CGI model they showed us that is crap. They shouldn't have done that ugly, textureless mockup. They could just have shown some concept art or something instead and people would have been very happy. You live and learn though.
