I don't hate the ship. But it does make me want to sing Daphne and Celeste every time I see it.

The key for me is the uniforms. You can have an ugly ship, terrible set design and Rom in the Captains chair. But if the uniforms terrible I'll still have to make/wear it to a con. And I'd prefer not to look like an absolute tit.

I was disappointed when I saw the NX and JJ Prise the first time. Why was because they weren't different enough, I felt they weren't their own ship. This is a very different design and while it's not in my top 5 it is different enough to make me excited.

I could get used to the design, I guess, but the quality of the visual effects is unacceptably bad for a 2016 TV show. Hell, it'd be pretty bad for a 2006 video game.

I do not mean to disrespect those that like it; after all, aesthetics are subjective.

Speaking only for me: yeesh that thing is a nightmare. The proportions are all wrong and it looks like a bad kit bash.

That ship does not have an alibi.

I also question the wisdom of digging up a design from a rejected series/concept (realizing that some scripts were used on TNG). I was really hoping for something new.

All of this being said: if the show is good I'll be more than happy to look at this thing regularly.

If they wanted to use one of the many rejected Trek-designs why couldn't they have use Eaves' early design for the NX-01? This would still look very much like a Trek-ship but different enough from the Jefferies/Probert-Enterprise.

I am a new to 3D modeling and I feel like I could do this better..

In fact.....hmmmmm :)

After watching the teaser about a zillion times, I still like it. From the front the ship looks downright scary, and although the view from underneath has an incongruous vibe to it, overall it's still good. The ship says "we mean business", not "we're here to drink tea and hold staff meetings".

These are not the finalized VFX for the show, just a quick and dirty teaser. According to Heather Kadin:
"We had three weeks to throw that together. We wanted to show fans…the concepts of the ship are totally what we're going for and they'll be honed up until, I think, the day we deliver."

Well, the elegance is good... but after all, it's space) The triangle forms work as good as rounded.

The key for me is the uniforms.
For a show that the showrunners say is "different," which is already evident in how they will tell stories (like a "novel"), the ship's appearance, and "crews" (plural), I would not make fundamental assumptions such as a uniformed crew. It could be a ship of mercenaries, for example - Star Trek Firefly. The Federation and Starfleet could be at odds with this crew. Anything can happen until we know more.

Or they may decide to have Starfleet only for exploraion and frontier sequrity, and build a proper battlefleet for defense and peacekeeping)

I'm surprised that this design seems to come as some kind of shock to so many, since the triangular hull concept goes way back to the seventies.

Do we know what era this show will take place in?

Well, generally fans just became accustomed to the curved lines and smooth surfaces of Federation (and even pre-Federation) starships, so anything angular and rough inflicted some... alienation, I think.
