Do we have any reason to suspect that a simple crewman doesn't get the same quality vacations as a captain?

Everyone in Starfleet has it better than real-life sailors. For one, their quarters are huge, and many more personnel have their own, instead of sharing. Even the top officers aboard an aircraft carrier (captain, CAG, and any admirals aboard) have quarters that are dwarfed by a lowly lieutenant's in TNG-era Trek.

Even Scotty said that his Quarters in the TNG era looked like VIP Quarters in the TOS era.

But those would have been guest quarters. And probably he got quarters intended for very distinguished guests too, since after all, Scotty was one of the legendary figures of 23rd century Starfleet.

It didn't prevent him from being treated like dirt by Geordi Laforge though.

Well that’s the enterprise d. She is basically a flying hotel in a way I doubt starships like saber or New Orleans or steam runner or even akira have those grand quarters. In a way he galaxy class was the federation way to show off.

True. But it also underlines that he was seen as a guest who shouldn't get in the way of standard operations.

On the other hand, I have to take my earlier remark back, they are just standard guest quarters.

SCOTT: Good Lord, man, where have you put me?
KANE: These are standard guest quarters, sir. I can try and find something bigger if you want.
SCOTT: Bigger? In my day, even an Admiral wouldn't have had such quarters on a starship.

I don't understand Geordi's rudeness toward Scotty. You don't behave like that around a living legend.

I have no doubt that if enough capable captains followed Picard's example, Starfleet would have no choice but to say "You don't want a promotion? Fine, good luck in your new civilian career."
They should have told Riker that lol

Things are always better in the future, todays sailors live better than their 18th century counterparts plus Starfleet personnel live on starships for years not just six months. It's a small village

Right I mean if you were to put an 18th century salior on today’s warships they would be in shock about all the space people get verses back then

I'd say the reverse would sooner be true ... well,at least, Picard never wants to go on a vacation ;)
And he has nearly a year's worth of leave time built up, according to Insurrection.

It's Geordi's engine room and Scotty is disrupting the work. Geordi's attitude makes perfect sense. The crime here was treating Scotty like a stereotypical old man willing to get in everyone's way because he's bored.

Starfleet really should have forced Riker to keep his promotion after TBOBW, a time when Starfleet needed capable captains. They probably didn't press the issue then because they didn't want to turn down the request of the guy who just saved the Federation. But he definitely should have been among the first promoted at the outbreak of the Dominion War.

Yeah Riker would have a great captain during the war

That would have been a great idea for the last two TNG movies... both ships in the movie, and we learn a bit about the new crew.

ST movies can keep going with a brand new crew, but with the familiarity of Riker and maybe one or two others staying with him.

Yeah that would have been great. And data could have been made first officer of etheir rikers or the enterprise. Well at least they made him a captain i the end. No commander forever.

How about a new series with Riker as the captain?
