Well done, newbie! Nixon stopped it.
All in a day's work, Admiral!

I suspect Apollo would've being canned no matter who was in, they beat the Russians to the moon and there was no sign another space competitor at the time. They won the space race, which is what they set out to do. Also there was those weird space Spiders off Apollo 18.
Well that’s what the film said...
If conservatives spoke as liberally about liberals as liberals speak about conservatives, we would be banned for intolerant hate speech. I guess it's good to be the King.
Well, the Queen of this board and the only admin who generally hands out permabans is a fairly strong conservative herself, and all three branches of our federal government are currently majority conservative, but by all means continue with your unfounded victimization. If conservatives spoke as liberally about liberals as liberals speak about conservatives, we would be banned for intolerant hate speech. I guess it's good to be the King.

This is arguably the sad thing, that such a defining moment of human success and peaceful exploration which in many ways was the culture which inspired trek should have been so motivated. Arguably the crowning glory of the twentieth century was still defined by fear of "the other", by prejudice and tribalism.
I had the incredible experience last year of visiting the Kennedy Space centre and seeing the preserved launch control apparatus. One real jarring point however was the openness with which it was presented not as a triumph for humanity, but for capitalism and democracy. Status rather than exploration, defeat of a rival rather than benefit of mankind.
Even as you wait to enter the control room you are presented with a video expounding how the US had at the time been trailing a distant second in the space race and how this spelled defeat for it's world standing, how Kennedy had revitalised the efforts to outdo the Russians and thus score points against communism on the world stage. Cue the switch from doleful music to optimistic.
Whilst we could get sidetracked ad infinitum about the cold war and the overarching politics of the twentieth century it really stands out that even the most outstanding of human successes should on some level be driven by our most basic and intolerant of impulses.
I'm curious about the "peace being shoved down our throats". What do you mean by it? It's a not uncommon theme in Star Trek that the federation is a little too over reaching and varying cultures resist this. It's all a little nebulous on screen though, what does the planet (sheesh, an entire planet..) get out of being in the Federation? Now Bajor got protection but I assume one thing it brings is trade agreements. But I could see that a planet like Ferenginar would feel it involves giving up too much of their own culture to meet Federation standards.
Sadly due to the stubborn nature of some humans, sometimes we only get social change after a long bloody fight. You really think equal rights based on skin colour, gender and sexuality would come about after peaceful dialogue? The world of Star Trek on Earth took place after a bloody WW3.
Who is this "we"? Some countries are considered more liberal than others so it would seem some people are ready for liberal ideology a better question to ask would be why are people so opposed to liberal ideology?
War whilst sometimes necessary should if at all possible be avoided by trying to work out things in a peaceful way, so exactly what peace is being shoved down our throats?
I've never actually had this happen to me. But I don't talk about politics in public. However, I do find it amusing to read the comments sections of "Anti-ST: Discovery" video's on Youtube, because of all the "They Ruined Star Trek with all this P.C./forced diversity crap!" comments, it's as if they don't know the Star Trek that they lament over was a P.C., Diversified, Socialist Utopia. I have strange political views anyway, and I have difficulty articulating my thoughts, as I'm sure many fellow posters who have read my writings are aware of.And are genuinely surprised/shocked when you're not??
I find it entertaining, not a rule book for life...
The hippies are in power right now? Are you kidding me?
The Liberal way of thinking is mainly from the late 60's and 70's of the flower children otherwise known as hippies. Those are the people in power right now and we've always hated them.
