Does it annoy anyone else that people expect you to be hardcore liberal if you're a Trekkie

I agree that there is (mostly) no correlation between what entertains you and your political beliefs. It’s lije saying if you’re a Star Wars fan you must love totalitarian dictatorships.
I notice though how often the liberal stories reflect defeat in their values. Discovery for example showed how the Federation embraced any values available to win a war.

^ And yet by the end that was explicitly said to be a violation of their core values and they ultimately chose to embrace and return to those values.

I am genuinely surprised that anyone is conservative.
It's kind of hard to cry crocodile tears about his comment when you said this:
I enjoy Trek more than hardcore Liberals, lol. Thank Goodness they are not the same. When Trek does some stupid leftie nonsense I patronise it or roll my eyes.

^ I prefaced 'hardcore' for libs, not general as in 'conservatives'. However he can think that :) He's entitled to his opinion.

Don't want to say too many spoiler things regards Discovery. It was easy for them to give lip-service to returning to certain values after the entire success for winning the war was not based on them.

What part of Star Trek, in your opinion, is "stupid leftie nonsense"? :vulcan:

I could make a guess, based on how you dismiss basic knowledge of the phases that stars go through in their existence, but I'd be interested to see if I'm wrong.

I'm perhaps using the word to loosely, I basically mean they expect you to be so left wing if you went any further you'd snap.

Have you actually encountered anyone who thought this, or is this just a hypothetical? Not the "liberal" in general thing, but the "so far left there's no more left to go" idea. Because I doubt people expect that at all.

I know there are conservatives who enjoy Trek, since I see them here on this very board. However, I would probably tend to expect that most (granted, not all) fans of Trek are at least socially progressive in their conservatism, since, as others have pointed out, this is sort of the default setting for Trek.

Of course, I'm a "liberal", with even some leanings into socialism. But I'm Canadian, so I don't consider this "hard core" or "far left" at all. People from other backgrounds may interpret differently. :)

And I only tend to "snap" when I see people spew hatred and vilification of women, visible minorities, LGBT, etc. And sadly I've seen a lot of this coming from purported Trek fans recently. I daresay, however, it's not coming from "hardcore liberals".

I'm way over to the left. I like being progressive rather than conservative - it has paid off, for me personally as well as society in general, more than conservatism ever has.

Conservatism is useful, in slowing things down, when things get overheated, but a society must move forward, or it's doomed.

We know that Justin Trudeau is a Star Wars fan... I wonder what his views are of Star Trek? Maybe one of us should shoot his office an email referencing this thread and ask for his two cents? :p

It doesn't annoy me because I've never met or spoken to a single person who expected Trekkies to be hardcore liberals.

Yes who are these mythical people? IF I am lucky enough to meet a star trek fan in the wild all they usually want to talk about is how it was all down hill after tng.

Or is the OP talking specifically about the internet?

We just need to send him some of these...

... and see if he wears them to an international meeting! :D

But I'm thinking we probably already have a reasonable idea...

I think most people are actually a mix of conservative and liberal at the same time.

Think about it, "fiscal responsibility" is viewed as a conservative concept but, many "liberals" support it too. Conservatives (mostly) support human rights, they just don't all agree on what those are (particularly on things like abortion).

I'm somewhat conservative but, I believe that if someone's "gay" - that's their business, not mine. I have no special right to say that their way of life is in anyway wrong because it's NOT my life that's being affected by that. I don't feel the need to force some religious claptrap down someone's throat...

Every one of us has different points of view on many different issues. We all have differing positions on many issues. Is there anything wrong with that? Nope - perfectly human.

It really doesn't bother me if someone thinks I'm hardcore liberal :guffaw: because of Star Trek. I know I'm not :bolian:

And sadly, there are some out there who don't even agree that everyone should be eligible for the same human rights. I guess in their minds, some are less human than others. (Please note, I'm not saying that this is anyone here.)

(And a bit OT, but just wondering...
"liberals"
... why these words were in quotes? Both liberals and gay people really do exist. :) )

I think some liberals don't even agree that everyone is eligible for the same human rights either :( Like you not saying it's people here.

Oh? And what examples would you give? 'Cause that kinda defines what makes a liberal, you know, a liberal.
