I would say most of those things (I don't believe for a second it has anything at all to do with STID), lack of promotion at the beginning of this year, dreadful teaser trailer - I guess it just didn't come across as a big 'event' movie when all's said and done, it was just 'another Star Trek movie', bar the destruction of the Enterprise, the stakes didn't seem high enough. Maybe Klingons or the Borg would have improved things. It's hard to tell why people haven't rushed to see it, as I believe fundamentally, the end product is sound.
This thread needs more "the marketing is absolutely perfectly fine, the almighty Paramount need not take any criticism from anyone" and Cumberbatch "NOPE" JPEGs.
Possibly all of the above, but from anecdotal evidence, its not going over that well with the 'genre' audience outside of hardcore Trek fans either.
I wanted to like it a lot more than I actually did. I'll buy the Bluray (I always do) but I'll be damned if I see it again at the cinema.

Pegg's gay Sulu row with Takei got more coverage in the UK media than Beyond.

Sorry, we're moving on to talking about Star Trek 4, now - you know, the one with Chris Hemsworth. Folks who want to convince themselves that ST 3 is a flop can stay here and turn out the lights.
If it turns a small profit at the box office, then Paramount is in good shape and we will see a sequel. A small profit at the box office means all ancillary income is profit. Home sales, sales to cable networks, merchandising. They'd probably end up with a $50-75 million dollar profit when it is all said and done.
We should also remember, there are lots of tax breaks from Vancouver and Dubai that will drive the total cost of the film down, when all is said and done. Plus there was the investment from the Chinese firm Alibaba.
So, while the box office downturn is disappointing, I don't think we're to doom and gloom territory just yet.
Not just Alibaba but also Chinese Huahua and there was a deal with Hewlett Packard as well.
And lets not even get to the whole Hollywood creative accounting business.

I agree with what other posters have said, I think the next Trek movie should have a lower budget. I wonder if that would be possible though because we know Pine and Quinto both negotiated hefty pay raises for the next movie and Chris Hemsworth being a leading man in his own right probably can command a good chunk of money.
I'm not good at the maths (like at all), so I wouldn't have a clue, but does anyone have an idea if someone's averaged out a down-trend for sequels compared to their previous films?
My guess on lack of performance, general audiences don't get the references, especially about Krall's backstory. WoM: It's a good movie but don't expect to understand WTH is going on, beyond the obvious.
None of the details were integral to the plot. "Krall fought in a war a century ago and his ship crashed and he's been here ever since." is all anyone needed to know, and that was clearly laid out in the film.
My wife doesn't follow Star Trek at all and had no problem following his motivation - he was a solider who got left behind. Also its a critique that doesn't make sense when considering opening weekends.
Maybe word pf mouth is getting around. Beyond was up 12% Tuesday at $7 million+.

Both ST09 and STiD had a good Monday, then progressively lower and lower during the week.
Let's see what Weds & Thurs brings! STB might buck the trend!

I just called three friends that live in different areas of the country, asked if they saw it. One said yes, (& liked it) the other two said they (and their families) want to see it but are giving some time for crowds to thin.
I've done that before too so I understand the sentiment. Perhaps the over all mentality is it is a hit so will be around long enough for taking time to go see.
Additionally, checking my theater schedule reveals it has 14 total showings on three screens for today, including IMAX screenings. Their calendar lists the same daily screenings through 8/1, the limit of scheduled information for the theater. That is just one theater!
