Does anyone know how Beyond is tracking for its opening weekend?

OK, the film has disappointed at the Box office, but all is not lost.
So far, we're at $160 million.
Lets say the US deliver another 45 million, that's $205 million.
Lets say that the rest of the world contributes a paltry $25 million more, that's $230.
Now for the great unknown. China.
It all hinges on China. If it can make $100 million there, then the box office looks better at $330. It's not inconceivable that it's gross a bit more, I still expect a total take of around $350-400 million.
If it achieves this, then it'll have shown growth in a developing market that is increasingly important. It will also break even. That means the film will still make a truck load of cash, what with DVD, blu ray and digital downloads.

I don't know what you mean by "truck load" of cash. China only delivers a quarter of its box office to the Studios. For example, STID did $40m in box office in the UK and $60m in China. In total though (all revenue), UK probably delivered around $52 million in revenue while China delivered around $16 million. This is because of lower box office shares and a complete lack of secondary revenue in China.

In fact if the UK delivers $20 million for STB (possible), China would need to have a box office of around $97 million to deliver the same amount.

In other words, a big box office in China is great but not all box office results are equal.

A representative of Paramount here in Brazil told me that the date of September (opening in Brazil) is because of Suicide Squad that will dominate the screens here in august. And it would be a financial loss.
I do not know if this is the right strategy, release dates through october. They would have to keep active marketing there.
In Brazil, until now, there were only two premiers (Rio and Sao Paulo), and no advertising on TV or poster. To my surprise, both sessions were full. Paramount of Brazil believes that people still do not know Star Trek Beyond and word of mouth will arouse the interest in the film (after Suicide Squad release).
But only social networks (facebook, twitter) and trek sites have helped to inform about premieres. I think this is somewhat disappointing. If I had not been for brazilian fans ...

I believe it means Paramount/Skydance don't have to spend a single cent in China as Alibaba/Hua Hua Media are handling the local distribution, promotions etc.

Paramount will get 25% of the box office.

So, even if by some miracle, Beyond took $100m (slightly less than double what Darkness took) in China, only $25m of that will be of any relevance? Well, I think any chance of China saving this movie just went south.

It does sound low but put it another way, 25% without having to spend a single cent in China = better than getting say 50% after spending on marketing, ads, promotions, distributions etc.

Hopefully Paramount will attribute this to being the year where just about everything that wasn't Marvel or Star Wars underperformed at the box office. I really want to see a ST14

Movies that people wanted to see did well. Movies that people didn't want to see did badly. You can't place Beyond's failure on a "bad year" or the economy or some other excuse.

Sure you can, if it's true, and it's true. There have been a number of movies to see this summer and it just isn't cheap. Trek's placement during the year is not idea, either.

Vanity Fair has an article in it about this summer's box office and it's saying box office is down 10% compared to last summer with only movies in released in May, most notably Captain America: Civil War, as the only strong successes. One explanation is the crowded market this summer but it also seems that the disproportional high number of critical duds earlier in the summer may have kept audiences away from better received movies like Star Trek Beyond.

They must have excluded animated films because movies like Dory, Jungle Book, Zootopia and Pets are absolutely killing it at the box office. Ice Age is dying a slow death but . . . . I don't like that series anyways.

Kid friendly movies will almost always kill at the box office and especially in second run theaters. I'm just throwing this out here but could the multiple formats be hurting STB and other movies?

For instance, our theater had XD, 3DXD, Digital 3D, and Digital with about 3 showings of each format per day in two auditoriums. I loathe 3D, for instance, and had to really do some planning just to find a showing to see.

I don't think the various formats are hurting it because if it hadn't been for the IMAX 3D ticket sales, Beyond's opening weekend numbers would have been lower.

I loathe 3D too! The trailers always looks amazing in 3D but the movies themselves are always too dark and not very 3D looking.

I watched Beyond in 3D... it made the space scenes pop, and the "final battle" on the Yorktown was magnificent in 3D.

Mrs.Q2 and I saw the movie last night in "Real 3D" and I thought the 3D was very "natural" and looked great. We really enjoyed it and thought the 3D in absolutely no way detracted from the movie or the experience. As you say, it really made the space scenes and Yorktown pop!

So how long does Star Trek have in the theaters? I just put out a Tweet/FB post to encourage people to see it..
