Two things today:

BBC Directory General (and card-carrying fan) Matt Brittin confirmed his commitment to the show

BBC director-general gives update on future of embattled Doctor Who

His comments come amid a period of uncertainty for the beloved programme

And not really a surprise but BBC Studios confirmed they'll be bidding to make the show when the tender goes out

BBC Studios will compete in the 'Doctor Who' tender, Tom Fussell has said, after Russell T. Davies and Disney+ stepped back from the sci fi hit.

A three-series deal, as with Casualty, seems the likeliest outcome.

I wonder what it was about TWB? The timing just before Christmas? The Torchwood vibes? The relatively short nature of it with just five episodes? Maybe it was just something a bit different at the time?

Or maybe people went in with such low expectations that they were pleasantly surprised?

The way Moffat has been talking about Doctor Who recently, I wonder if his production company (Hartswood Films) is looking at placing a bid. ITV is a part owner of Hartswood, so that would be interesting -- ITV making Doctor Who for the Beeb.

I'm not saying that Moffat would showrun Doctor Who if Hartswood won the bid, no. I don't think he'd want to at this stage in his life. We're all older than we were fifteen years ago. But would he find a showrunner if his company got it? No doubt. If he's bidding, he may even have one lined up.

That would literally be the best possible news.

There's no bigger Moffat fan than me, but I wonder if we don't need a clean break? If he'd have minimal involvement and his chosen showrunner had their own ideas and new take on Who that's fine, but could he avoid being drawn into things, especially if things didn't go well?

I think the important thing is that various production companies will be bigging. The show is far from dead!
