Quick question, what is a "Kiss-a-gram" ?

Forgive this colonial, I'm not familiar with that term :p

she explained it right there in the episode. they go to parties and kiss people. often whilst wearing sexy outfits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kissogram

(even references Who)

And to think, when we saw the first photos of this episode last year, this whole board was wondering just what kind of police officer would wear such short skirts. And now we know!

Okay, I couldn't wait 2 more weeks! This was fantastic! Love it to bits. Matt Smith was great as the Doctor, and I loved Amy. I enjoyed the Doctor's rapport with her (both older Amy and younger Amelia), and the TARDIS interior looks much better in the episode than it did in those magazine pics that were posted recently.

I also enjoyed the visuals of the opening title sequence, and it was cool how the sound of the TARDIS could be heard whenever it zipped close to the camera. However, I'm not totally sold on the theme tune, and I don't quite like how the DOCTOR WHO logo actually looks when it comes on screen; I thought it would look more the way it does in the ads and promo materials. Just didn't seems to be all there, so to speak. But none of that really matters that much, as long as the episodes themselves are great, and this one hit the mark on all counts.

Is it next week yet? :D

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I kind of saw the 10th doctor in Smith, he was running around quite a bit like the last Doctor. I was kind of hoping they'd tone that down a bit, maybe as the season progresses.
The Doctor has always been running around. I don't think they will tone it down.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Absolutely loved it. That fairytale quality came through really strong, all the way from the opening with little Amelia to the unveiling of the new TARDIS (which looked so much better than in those Radio Times pics, and had a great sense of magic about it).

And as expected, Matt Smith is proving to be VERY fun to watch. The scene on the roof was absolutely brilliant, and I loved how we saw the costume come together into something that felt pretty iconic even at this early stage. I know some felt he didn't project enough toughness, but I thought his line at the end was delivered perfectly, with just the right amount of understated menace.

I also really love the music that played during that sequence (which we originally heard in the trailer). Not sure if that's the new "Doctor's Theme," but I hope they continue using it.

As for the new theme and titles... they're growing on me. I like the full 1 minute version, but they really need to tweak the sound mix or something for the TV version. It's just coming across way too muddled. I DO like the feeling of impending danger that comes across though. It's a nice change from the previous version, which felt a bit too light and carefree.

Well to be fair, he DID only have 20 minutes to save the world, so lots of running around was to be expected.

But anyone expecting Moffat to bring back the quieter, slower-paced style of the classic show is probably going to be disappointed. "Fast and fun" has proven to be very popular now, and I doubt Moffat or the BBC really want to mess with that.

Personally, I think both styles work well for this show.

I was looking forward to seeing this for a long while but....

This just blew me away. Consider me as one who has fallen hard for this new look and series. Fraking loved the opening shots over London with the Doctor hanging out of the Tardis, can it get anymore fairytale like in it's opening?

Whole episode was a wonderful introduction, funny, action packed, plenty of references to what came before. sweet, charming, scary. I felt like a child watching it.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

The story itself was good too. You can tell Moffat's much better at plots than RTD. Ok, it's a bit handy for the resolution that it was Prisoner Zero and not Prisoner Eight Thousand Four Hundred and Sixty-Eight, but overall it held together well.

How so? I don't follow. Except for the RTD/Moffat part I get and agree. The solidness of it all was much more obvious, which is why I don't follow with the rest of your critique...

Goodness knows what Moff was thinking with having Amy not turn around while the Doctor was changing. I guess between him gobbing up food and her insisting on seeing his nob, that's the heavy-handed shitcom writer in him.
Hmmm. You're totally welcome to feel that way. But, I have to say...man, unclench. It was a harmless joke that's been done a million times before in a million different stories--a lot of them of more caliber than a science fiction television show. ;) Consider this: would you rather the burping trashcans and farting aliens return?

Overall, my personal take:

  • Theme: 4/10

  • Opening Visuals: 6/10

  • Doctor: 11/10

  • Amy: 10/10

  • TARDIS: 10/10

  • Plot: 7/10

  • Overall Feel: 9/10

Just be happy that she's a) gorgeous and b) not from London.

(a) I'm ecstatic. Thrilled. Hell, I'm doing the Dance of Joy.

(b) Or Wales. It's about time Scotland got to represent again. There's still Jamie to atone for.

Oh, and I'd just like to ask about those kiss-a-grams. Is it considered gauche to order one for oneself, and to specify that it be Amy Pond, in her policewoman gear? 'Cause I'm eyeing the phone...

I just watched it, somewhere, and I have to say, this episode put aside all of my doubts about Matt Smith as the Doctor. I also adore Karen Gillan as Amy Pond. She is quite the looker. ;)

I can't wait to see what The Silence turns out to be, it is kind of odd that they established the overall arc in the first episode but I am looking forward too it.

On a side note, did the Doctor give early 21st century humanity FTL? Or did I hear wrong?

No, sounds like he did, would match with him saying that Earth is now a level five fully developed planet which threw me as I was sure last time this was mentioned it was a level three.

Has to do with s-e-x, same as the kissogram schtick and Amy's tiny shorts. Oh, and running away with another man on the eve of her wedding, of course.

PBS is starting to air series 4 and they used the level 5 line
DOCTOR
Seeding a level 5 planet is against galactic law.

Are you threatening me?

That's a skirt she's wearing. Trust me, I've spent so much time just looking at these scenes in slo-

It's a skirt, alright?

God bless Jeff

The end of the world approaches and he's porn surfing.

They were right when they hinted "You'll know why Wilfred said Webcams were naughty"

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

He was probably on Chatroulette.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Ah yes, the surfing-the-Internet-for-porn gag. Clearly this "kid's show" is in safe hands with Moffat. Thank god.

Amy's get-up may well have been a skirt, I couldn't really tell. Whatever it was, it was about right for a stripper - uh, "kissogram-er".

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I rather loved the 'internet porn' gag. Obviously one of those 'something for the adults' bits. :)

I was actually a bit surprised at hearing the Doctor say 'hell' while he was gatherign clothes. Guess I'm still not used to hearing him curse. Even such a minor one.

I've been hearing the 'Amy's a stripper' thing way too much. I think the shows gonna have to add a bit of dialogue about this at some point.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

He said "helluva" about three or four times in the whole episode.
