I was really disappointed to begin with, with the ridiculous spectacle of Smith hanging out of the Tardis door,
can anyone else remeber what the point of that was again? given that Moffatt said in Confidental about making the show less London centric, that bit seemed pointless.

Is it just me though, or is the CGI notably poorer than it used to be? The Tardis bombing around London was really unconvincing to me.
I mentioned in my review how the CGI is being poorly married with the real life elements.

There would seem to be some compositing issues. I guess the production team haven't quite got to grips with working in HD yet.

The show has also had a budget cut AND moved to HD at the same time. Frankly, it shouldn't look as good as it does. And honestly, it does look good. It's nicely shot, it doesn't have that garish over-sharpened video look to it any more, and the artistry still makes up for any technical/money limitations.

You guys talk as if the series' visuals have been ILM quality up to this point... dodgy effects shots have been a part of it since day one!

It's better than toy tanks at any rate.

That was, to me, the most RTD-esque part of the episode. From the zoom-in on Earth to the completely bonkers scene with the Doctor hanging from the TARDIS, these are the things that Rusty would have done. I think they were in the episode, particularly the zoom, just because audiences would expect them -- and also to tweak/mock RTD. Those two minutes were Smith's "Pudsey Cutaway," basically, a link from one episode to the next.

The logical start would have been Amelia praying to Santa. Then have the TARDIS crash, the anchor thrown out, and the Doctor pulling himself up out of the doors. Then go to credits.

that is the logical start point, however those two minutes are not a good link between End of Time Part 2 & The Eleventh Hour, for one its cleary a post 2000 London, where as when he meets Amelia its more than likely he is in the past. To say nothing of how he came to be hanging out of the door like that.

The Pudsey Cutaway answers questions, this one just creates more, there is really no question that needs is answering about how the TARDIS ending up crashing where & when it did in The Eleventh Hour.

Jim Steele on the issue of CGI, whilst I agree that NewWho has had some shockingly poor green screen/real life marriage in the past, it has had some good examples, something I felt was missing from The Eleventh Hour.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I really liked this one. I initially had reservations about Smith's age but he sold me almost immediately. I think he had a much better debut than Tennant, with the "Christmas Invasion" and the S2 opener, "New Earth". I think I'm going to quite like Matt Smith after all.

And the Doctor is developing a bit of a pattern, making Earth girls all too easy. The Amy-Rory bit was just like the Rose-Mickey bit. The Doctor ridicules the guy and steals the girl. It reminds me of Zaphod's line to Trillan, "Hey babe, this guy boring you? Come with me. I'm from another planet."

as far as dating events go...

why assume that when he arrives at Easter to little seven year old Amelia, it's Easter 2005?

he left Earth on January 1, 2005. He crashes at Easter. why assume he went forward to Easter 2005? he could've wound up at Easter 1996 or Easter 1998 or even Easter 2000. any where in a small window that would lead 12 years later to be somewhere post 2008 when mobiles with cameras in had become common place in the UK.

in fact, at a push, I'd assume it's 2008 in the majority of the episode, so Amelia's scenes are in 1996. that neatly puts her as a present-day companion and gets us off the 'one year ahead' thing.

We also need the dog to fart and something falling out of the sky with a cartoonish sound effect.

I Watched this yesterday and really enjoyed it, I warmed to smith as the doctor a lot more quicker than i did with tennant as the doctor and i really enjoyed Amy and the take on the companion that the moff did.

the eye monsters were not the greatest ever but i feel the point of this was for amy to regain her lost faith in the doctor and all things good. I really enjoyed this episode however i felt that perhaps the episode at the end did run on a bit to long at the end once the whole threat was dealt with.

other people I have spoken to since the episode who aren't really doctor who fans has ended seemed to have all seem to have spoken positively about it.

im defiantly looking forward to next weeks episode

It will be interesting to see if picking up Amy two years in the future makes a difference from picking her up moments after "The Eleventh Hour"

Two years and the world hasn't been obliterated by an alien menace? Ofcourse any other doctor could have been helping out during those two years.

Its possible that the first 2 minutes are set January 1st 2005 (has to be sometime after 2000 what with the Millennium Dome), directly after his regeneration, and then the TARDIS feel back in time to Amelia, which is what, early 90s?

That still does not answer how he feel out of the TARDIS, and why we needed it?

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

The Doctor inadvertently told us why Amy is fascinated with her; he's her faerie tale. She's there for the love of adventure and escapism. ****, that's probably why she began doing kiss-a-grams -- it allowed her to fulfill some of her fantasies and dreams, even if compromises had to be made. She's in love with the idea of the Doctor and what he does, not the Doctor himself.

And, of course, her adventures with the Doctor will teach her why living a real life is more important than living in a fantasy world, and she'll probably wind up marrying Rory at the end of her companionship. In effect she'll have been allowed to fulfill her most fondest wish as if it were just a daydream, then continue on with her life all the wiser for it after he drops her off the day before her wedding... just like he promised. All exactly as if it were a real faerie tale.

THIS

Great explanation, and I agree.

What does stop the Doctor from running into his other selves? Both 9 an 10 were in this period so how does 11 prevent from walking right into prior events?

Quick question, what is a "Kiss-a-gram" ?

Forgive this colonial, I'm not familiar with that term :p

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Jim Steele did the flight over London, add anything to the story?

Snick27 the Doctor has a good idea of where he is in history, so knows where to go & where not to go, he does not need to skip two years to go back to Leadworth, and pick up Amy.

A Kissogram is employed to deliver a greeting and a kiss to a client. Usually an unsuspecting one, On their birthday, probably. In a saucy outfit of choice.

EDIT: Dammit! Too late...

:D

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

It's a reset. The chameleon circuit is stuck on one setting - Police Box, 1960s. The real deal had the logo on the door, apparently. Now that it's undergone a major repair/reboot, it's restored to, uh, factory settings. Or default. Or something. It's been in a number of articles I've read about the new version.

The circuit isn't broken, otherwise we'd see the TARDIS as it really is - it's just stuck. Like a radio station when ou can't change the dial, so you listen to Golden Classic Smooth Rock Oldies until you shoot yourself.

Being of the firm belief that the Tardis is sentient, i always thought the Tardis prefers the police box shape and so probably telepathically lets the Dr know that subconsciously, and that's why he never really fixed it even though he has tried.....but that's just my take on it.:)

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I liked the new theme. I like Amy. I'm not sure about Matt Smith. I'd like him to settle in before I evaluate him as the Doctor. I really didn't much like him last night. However, even if I hate him, he'll go away in a few years and maybe I'll like the next one.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I kind of saw the 10th doctor in Smith, he was running around quite a bit like the last Doctor. I was kind of hoping they'd tone that down a bit, maybe as the season progresses.
