Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

to be honest I am worried about Amy Ponds mental state, and im wondering if the Doctor who feels responsible will drop her off and then go back in time, to correct the damage he did by not coming back.

I thought he tried that- the TARDIS rematerialized in front of little Amelia at the end of the episode...

Then again, we didn't see him come out, so, who knows, maybe it's actually a teaser for episode 13, maybe it's prisoner zero in a new disguise, maybe it's the Master's TARDIS...

Actually I interpreted that as a dream older Amy was having when the sound of the TARDIS materialising outside worked its way into her dream, which is when she woke up and realised he was outside...

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Wouldn't that create a paradox as it would result in a completely different Amy than the one we saw all grown up? And thus huge monsters would show up and start eating everything in sight?

I need to rewatch that scene, but it really didn't fit in with anything that happened at all.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Yeah I noticed that as well and pondered things...as Spock would say...fascinating!

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

It's terrible what HD can do to an actor if they're having an off day.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Average.

The show's pretty much unchanged in most respects. Amy's a keeper - she and her family have some of the charm of Rose's group, and she has much of Rose's sex appeal. So that's a step up. Matt Smith is just there - Davies insisted on first-rate actors for the part, and Smith doesn't seem to have those chops. The new opening lacks the energy and urgency of the previous one, but I suppose they figure they don't have to sell this thing as hard as they did in 2005 - in TV years, it's settling comfortably into middle age.

Yeah, took me a minute, but after a bit I figured that was a dream as well.

What's with that logo on the Tardis door? Technically it can't be there since the outside form of the Tardis is because of the chameleon circuit being stuck on a police box in 1963 and any change it it's outward visual look would mean the chemeleon circuit was working again wouldn't it?

Absolutely loved it. Moffat has delivered, and it satisfies.

Seriously, i loved every minute of it.

From the opening credits with the new cloudy vortex and 70s meets Danny Elfman theme, oh and lightening bolts. To the first scene where The Doctor climbs out of the Tardis soaking wet from the swimming pool that is in the library, then craving an apple and hating it, then being fed bacon, then beans, bread and butter, and the best part fish fingers and custard. FABULOUS.

Smith was everything i had hoped for as The Doctor. Erratic, random, touchingly emotional, creepy, eccentric and stern all that the same time.

That face of his just emulates everything at once, hes fab.

The meeting of Amelia and then the grown up Amy was brilliant. The time jumps without realising it, but who would after almost destroying the Tardis and then running about trying to fix it then returning in what seems like 5 minutes that turns out to be 12 years, then naffing off after hes saved the world to come back 2 years later by mistake instead of 2 minutes later after giving the repaired Tardis a shakedown around the moon.

The Doctor coming to terms with his change was great though, and i was pleased that Moffat didnt drag out the regen like RTD did with the Christmas Invasion, The Doctor just keeps going and going until he clicks back into place and bvecomes The Doctor, walking through the hologram of David Tennant that was also of all the previous Doctors. FAB.

And again Moffat strikes gold by creeping out all the kids in the world with a spot in your house that you are always afraid to look in, just in the corner of your eye. I had a spot like that in my house at the top of our stairs when i was a kid, so its still creepy even to me. CLASSIC.

Its just Matt Smith, wow. I cant think of anything to say short of BRILLIANTLY ACTED.

The Doctor is mad, and so is Matt. It works. ;)

Didnt expect the outfit selection to be in the hospital locker room though, a bit too TV Movie there, but non the less, when hes talking to the Atraxi and selecting a tie, just randomly veering off about the tie, then strait back to the conversation was great.

"Lokk at you, not even scared. Box falls out the sky, man falls out of box, man eats fish custard. That must be a helluva crack in your wall." :) Moffat Gold.

Wow! That was so cool!

First of all, let me say that I think it was a shame that an older actor was not cast to play the Doctor. I think they really missed an opportunity. As they have done so repeatedly since the 2005 revival.

However,..

Smith has this wonderful uncoordinated intensity. He comes across as quite clumsy, but he has all the energy, if not more, than his predecessor. This seems to me an extremely dynamic and active Doctor.

He's a bit like Troughton on speed - but without the vulnerable, almost helpless qualities the second Doctor had.

The story was good too. Well written and realised. Although it was just essentially an alien-of-the-week in it's most generic sense, there was a nice level of drama to it all, as well as a feeling that this is a modern day fairy tale.

To be fair, Moffat has used a tried and true element that he has used before - the idea of the Doctor appearing to a child as their savior, then the 'I'll be back in 5 mins' routine before returning years later (as first seen in The Girl in the Fireplace). But it works. It's only the second time (IIRC) that the author has returned to this well, and it still works a charm.

Oh and the TARDIS looks wonderful in full flight. You really have to see that interior in an episode to appreciate it fully.

The theme tune was very much Trial of a Timelord/McCoy era, which on the face of it seemed a strange direction to go, but it's fine really - it's growing on me quite a bit. The new title animation sequence I am not completely sold on, but at least it is a welcome departure from the RTD era titles which seemed to be getting a little stale.

I enjoyed it all immensely, so much so that I am having difficulty thinking of any negatives I could attribute to this episode. Give me time though, I'm sure something will precipitate.

Suffice to say I thought this was Who done right. It may not be quite Blink quality, but it's up there as one of the better episodes of the last 5 years, and one of the finest intro's for any doctor thus far.

Thoroughly impressed.

Aye, and that hospital they were in reminded me an awful lot of the one we see in Spearhead from Space. Does anyone know if they are the same hospital?

as you can see two very different buildings, note the clock on top of Leadworth Hospital (assuming that is what it was called)

Late to the party, as always, but I just want to say: awesome. Hello, Matt Smith, welcome to the party. :techman:

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I was really disappointed to begin with, with the ridiculous spectacle of Smith hanging out of the Tardis door, the rubbish new theme and titles, and then his big face gobbing up food. It got better though, and he was quite likeable for the most part. I'm not sure he's distinguished himself from Tennant enough, but we'll see as time goes on.

The story itself was good too. You can tell Moffat's much better at plots than RTD. Ok, it's a bit handy for the resolution that it was Prisoner Zero and not Prisoner Eight Thousand Four Hundred and Sixty-Eight, but overall it held together well.

Goodness knows what Moff was thinking with having Amy not turn around while the Doctor was changing. I guess between him gobbing up food and her insisting on seeing his nob, that's the heavy-handed shitcom writer in him. Well plotted though. Pros definitely outweigh the cons.

Is it just me though, or is the CGI notably poorer than it used to be? The Tardis bombing around London was really unconvincing to me.

can anyone else remeber what the point of that was again? given that Moffatt said in Confidental about making the show less London centric, that bit seemed pointless.

I mentioned in my review how the CGI is being poorly married with the real life elements.

Well, on the flipside, Eleven >was< leaving London, in a sense. Or rather, symbolically he passed up London and found a better adventure instead.
