Do You Want To See One Big Ass, Insane Fleet Battle?

StarMan

Vice Admiral

I love me my fleet battles. DS9's Sacrifice Of Angels gave me goosebumps watching all those Galaxy, Reliant, Akira and Excelsior class ships (and lest we forget the Oberth class) diving into the Dominion/Cardassian fleet.

Not that it's the be all and end all, of course. It's very fanboyish. But I must admit a small part of me would love to see the Enterprise lead a fleet of ships into battle and unleash an absurd amount of mayhem.

You?

For the last time: Shatner's not going to be in the movie!!!

I love a big fleet battle as much as the next man, but I don't know how appropriate it would be. There's a lot of dialogue in TOS that implies that there aren't many starships in Starfleet in those days.

My fanboy ship dream is to see some of the ships from the old technical manuals onscreen.

Sure, in a 24th century Star Trek film. I don't think it would fit in Trek XI, since it's supposed to evoke the spirit of TOS and as you know that show never had big-ass insane fleet battles.

I for one would be all for that. I love me some big fleet battles as well, and would love to see a large budget battle of decent length. That would very likely make the movie for me. :)

I have a goatse link if you're interested.

I'd be cool with a ridiculously large battle. Certainly would make making fanvids easier. That said, there's a reason "Sacrifice of Angels" is pretty much the be-all and end-all of major Trek fleet battles--Trek tends not to rely on them for storytelling very often.

Basically, I'd love it, but I won't cry if there isn't, and I don't want to see it shoehorned in. Does that make sense?

As with all things: only if it contributes to the story.

Or maybe put it in the Kobayashi Maru test. That would be a good way to do it without it contributing to the story.

Sure, as long as it contributes to the story and isn't thrown in there just for the sake of having "One Big Ass, Insane Fleet Battle". I never got the impression from TOS that Starfleet didn't have many ships, just that Constitution class starships were kind of rare. Wasn't Starfleet ready to send a fleet to go into war against the Klingons in "Errand of Mercy" until the Organians intervened?

Starfleet DID send a fleet to go to war against the Klingons in "Errand of Mercy". They were very close to engaging when the Organians intervened.

We just don't know the size and numbers on either side- considering everything having to do with the fleet took place on the Enterprise Bridge.

As far as I can tell, the idea that the Enterprise was part of a very rare number of starships total manifested itself in the movies. TMP, TWOK, TFF, and even Generations for the Enterprise-B. It works for drama but you have to admit nobody would be stupid enough not to churn out as many of those babies- even the weakling Scouts- as possible in real life.

At first glance it sounds like an awesome idea. But, like others have said, it's not particularly TOS. As it stands I'm sure we'll have no shortage of shit blowing up real good.

Unless it actually services the plot somehow, no. There will be a ship battle, I'm fairly certain, but it will be one on one action, or maybe a small group.

That's all it should be. A big ass insane fleet engagement, that's a big wad to blow on your first outing, innit?

Gimme, gimme, gimme!

I'm all for some big-ass fleet battle. TOS canon be damned!

(yeah, go ahead and flame me...)

Size matters not, what you do with it counts :p

Trek has done ship-on-ship well (TWOK, TSFS) and badly (Insurrection, Nemesis). Having lots of ships on screen has the potential to be alright at best and very bad at worst.
