I've just never heard of someone of such status practically practicing abstinence. he's surrounded by fit, ambitious young women that view him as the peak of their entire social structure. it would be shooting fish in a barrel.
The more heroic the character is the more unrealistic they're going to seem. Picard is the anti-Kirk and therefore he has less of a raging libido and is more of a man of principle rather than impulse. It's part of the core of who he is as a made-up heroic character.
I understand how his impulse-control is a harder sell these days as the millenial generation has completely lost the ability to regulate their desires. .

is there any real life parallels to gather from? i doubt the navy has many female crewman on board. definitely not in a laidback, 50/50 type deal as on a starship
