do you think picard and riker ever had sex with subordinates?

Lol!
I was in the US Army for 4 years.
Regular "Peyton Place. "
I was young, cute, long curly hair almost to my waist. Like Troi's only mine was real, not a hair piece or a fake old perm.

Oh, I could tell some stuff that went on, it would curl you guys and gals' hair!

I think with Picard and LT Daren it was pretty obvious that they hit it.
As far as her being treated differently, Riker just inferred that she was trying to get over.
In reality, as Picard pointed out to Riker, she was only doing her job to try to get the people she wanted in her department.

As for Riker, there are a lot of incidents where he is seen with other females in 10 Foward for example.
But I thought that in one episode or another they discussed dating within the ranks and they concluded (because it's not the military) it was okay. Maybe I'm not sure if that was on the show or only in my deluded mind.
But I thought that it was determined to be okay. The real problem comes in for the senior person that has to order the 'loved one' into harms way.
The one receiving the order understands but the one doing the ordering is the one that experiences the pain. - like Picard when he thought LT Daren had died in the firestorm on the planet.
However, I have seen first hand how it has happened where the subordinate 'mysteriously' doesn't end up being ordered to the shit zone with the rest of their unit, 'mysteriously' .
Conversely, "steal" away a high ranking person's toy and see how 'mysteriously' one ends up being ordered to the shit duty an inordinate number of times and or length of time.

As for losing ones career due to indiscretions, they have to know for certain that the two parties are bumping uglies for anything to actually happen to their careers.
You just have to not be stupid.
Seems like with Facebook, Twitter and texting and sexting people are just stupider.

"Lessons" is the episode that clarifies that Starfleet doesn't have regulations against relationships between officers of different ranks. (I imagine sexual harassment is still not allowed, of course.) But as the same episode shows, in such a relationship it's still difficult to avoid special treatment or just the appearance of such.

men of power rarely don't use their position to procure intercourse with attractive women.

That's a sexist & ridiculously sweeping generalisation.

I also think it's pretty clear that Picard was reclusive, even isolated, on the ship in order to maintain his 'Captain' image amongst the crew.

Riker, I assume, was far more promiscuous.

I think Riker would be the sort to think a relationship between the captain and a crewmember would be highly questionable but between him and a crewmember, no real problem, only when one was the captain would the issue of authority become too great.

No they didn't use their power/position to pursue subordinates. Riker half the time was going after the alien of the week, holodeck characters etc. Picard didn't have the time and was interested in people like Vash. The one time that stands out where he is interested in a subordinate he is completely up tight about it. And with Beverly it takes him decades to make a move by that point she knows him more than just as the captain.

Riker and Troi got married before they left for the Titan. So I would think the answer is "yes".

The episodes showed us only a small window into their lives. Hard to know when they shower, use the commode, or have sex... ;)

I think Riker didn't date anyone among the crew. One word -- Deanna. Look at how uncomfortable things got between them in Conundrum once Ro was in the picture. Riker was into "off world" women, though. Remember "Games." This is why Riker went to Risa so often. ;)

As for Picard, he was very conservative about dating anyone on the ship. I expect he was intimate with Nella in "Lessons"... but very discreetly. There is also one other factor -- Dr. Crusher. There was some inuendo that Jean-Luc and Beverly had a little "crush" on each other. And we've seen it realized in a number of episodes. So I think that created some added restraint on Picard's part. Of course, we did see Beverly indulge herself a couple of times. But she was really holding out for Picard. And we know they eventually got married... then divorced.

I've just never heard of someone of such status practically practicing abstinence. he's surrounded by fit, ambitious young women that view him as the peak of their entire social structure. it would be shooting fish in a barrel.

The more heroic the character is the more unrealistic they're going to seem. Picard is the anti-Kirk and therefore he has less of a raging libido and is more of a man of principle rather than impulse. It's part of the core of who he is as a made-up heroic character.

I understand how his impulse-control is a harder sell these days as the millenial generation has completely lost the ability to regulate their desires. That's why this kind of hero is largely portrayed as naive fish-out-of-water types like Captain America or the new Wonder Woman.

lol is that a joke? baby boomers want to talk about impulse control?
hey you know the baby boomers at my job were able to afford a house, 2 cars, a stay-at-home wife and a half a dozen kids up until like, the 80's? now my 25 dollar an hour job can barely cover rent in a shitty apartment. but i'm sure it's cause we're lazy now and blah blah blah.

Um, what?

Picard, never, except of course for the one episode that he does LOL (Lessons) which is very short lived.

As far as Riker, he probably boned every female on board the ship between the ages of 18 and 50.

We did see Riker have several dates with woman but I think they were always wearing civilian clothes which brings up the issue of rank and civilians.

Yeah, I was going to say, we see Riker on dates and chatting up women on the ship fairly regularly. Not clear whether they're actually in Starfleet or just civilian without commissions serving on the ship in "support roles". Regardless, it was pretty clear he had an active romantic life. He and Troi also sometimes gave off vibes on the show where I wouldn't be surprised if they had the occasional hookup even before the movies. But he wouldn't have "used" his position regardless. He probably just saw women socially off-duty. Don't know what real life military rules are, but I don't see a problem with it myself unless it's the Captain or someone who directly reports to someone else (i.e if Geordi dated a woman who worked directly under him in Engineering)

No for Picard, though, except in Lessons.

They wouldn't abuse their power, as that conjures up some horrible images - they wouldn't order a subordinate to have sex with them, or use their position to get away with sexual threats or harassment.

But being the two senior officers aboard, it would put them in a position that could be awkward or even inappropriate. As Picard said, he could end up in the position of having to send any potential lover into danger, which might either send them to their certain death or make him distracted enough about their own safety to either put the mission in jeopardy or compromise his clarity and decisiveness.

So whilst there is nothing to stop Picard from having a romantic partnership with someone on his staff, he'd likely refrain from it. Picard isn't prudish and has had girlfriends in the past, he'd rather stay in his quarters drinking tea and reading.

I think one of the reasons why Picard felt it was okay to have a romance with Neela Darren in "Lessons" is because she was in charge of her department and around his own age which makes them feel like they are on a more equal footing. Plus she is in position where I suspect things like dangerous away missions is probably not the norm. I mean how many times have we seen anyone from stellar Categrophy ever go on away missions before this ep?

Jason

Except in "Lessons" I believe he does bend the rules a bit to Darren's benefit.

IIRC, it was established that fraternization is allowed throughout Starfleet, regardless of rank or position, as long as it's consensual for all involved. So that episode didn't violate any rules.

Er, I was referring to Picard at one point giving Stellar Cartography favor over another department with regards to sensor usage or such. It wasn't necessarily inappropriate, but it could be argued Darren had a degree of influence there.

If anyone is watching reruns of "Enterprise" the only actual sex encounter I've seen was with T'pol & Tucker in her quarters and then in a 'dream' sequence she literally attacks Tucker!!. There were a lot of 'hints' at sexual activity but I've never seen any with Lt. Reed. A few hints at his 'interest' in someone but no actual contact as far as I've seen so far. Maybe we should pose this question to one of the crew of TNG at the Con? Seems harmless to ask but who knows they might not want to answer.

men of power rarely don't use their position to procure intercourse with attractive women. i understand picard is as big a mary-sue as it gets, but he's not a monk.

is there any real life parallels to gather from? i doubt the navy has many female crewman on board. definitely not in a laidback, 50/50 type deal as on a starship

I recall there being some discussion about fraternization and it was acceptable on a starship, though I also recall one in VOY where it was... less acceptable?

Most realworld scenarios have strict policies forbidding it.

As to did they? Riker, yes... it is implied he is intimate with Troi, who as lieutenant commander is his subordinate, on many occasions. He is also implied to have been with Ro in "Conundrum" (though I forget his rank at the time she was def an ensign), which despite having memory problems was still Riker being himself, and ofcourse there's the many instances of intense flirting between him and women in general (crewmen included). He obviously has no issue with it (when it comes to himself).

Picard? No. He is hardly ever seen engaging in romantic pursuits, the main one being with Beverly Crusher, and he always seemed to keep a distance there (I think they even discussed it, and decided it was a bad idea, one reason being they served together). Then the implicit relationship with Daren ended due to that as well... It seems like he's more of a whole romance/relationship/long term thing kind of guy, and also really loves his career.

I would definitely say neither has done it in a "hey secretary could you come over here and XXX or else" kind of way. I bet Riker has had many a consensual one night stand with female crewmen who had a crush on the big strong hero (as I am sure Kirk did).
