As I have a dog that is a great escape artist and have a habit of sometimes taking herself out for a walk, then yeah, I make sure that the door is always locked Only problem is that she has figured out of to turn the lock and open the door, so I have to not only lock the outer door, but the door leading to the entry area as well.

Unless I'm venting, then yeah. But only when I'm home.

If its warm enough outside, then yeah, I'll leave the windows open on hot summer nights.

Yes. It's a habit I got into when I was living in dorms in college that has stuck with me ever since.

No. This was something ingrained in me from childhood; the front door should always be locked at night, for safety. Out of all of the questions, this really does strike me as sheer common sense. No point giving people an open invitation to rob you.

Yes if I'm not in. If I'm in, it depends on whether it's hot or not!

No. I can't sleep with the windows open. Even if it's very hot (rare in this country), I prefer having a fan on rather than opening the windows.

When I was little, I remember that the keys were always on the outside of the door. Things are not the same now, but still:

I actually never lock it at night (except from some time in the past when it used to open on its own...)

I guess having grown up in fairly large city has biased me. I don't trust anyone enough to just go about leaving my home open to just anyone. I don't really have anything that I would be upset about if it was stolen. I just don't like the idea of being invaded like that. I would consider it a violation.

1) Yes. I am home alone all day and many of my neighbors know it. The door is locked.
2) No.
3) Generally, yes, since it's usually hot as hell here and I wouldn't want to lose the A/C.
4) No. The only time I do that is when the power goes out and it's too unbearably hot not to. We live in a very safe community, but there have been a rash of home invasion-style break-ins, so I keep my little home pretty secure. Besides, I'm a very light sleeper and any noise wakes me up.

No. I check it on the way up to bed. If the husband is out of town, I lock the door out to the garage and also my bedroom door.

We rarely get to open windows, but I would leave 2nd story windows open. A thief would need a very long ladder to access the house.

1) If college taught me anything, it's that people will accidentally walk into your room while you're naked. Therefore, I always have my door locked. Plus, in my old apartment, if the deadbolt wasn't locked, the door would shake.

3) I open my windows all the time. The heat in my building is obnoxious right now, and I have no control over the thermostat, so opening my windows is the only thing I can do to stay comfortable. That said, I don't open them too wide for fear of my cat damaging the screen.

If it's not hot enough for the AC, I will open the windows that aren't accessible from the ground, and also the french doors. I also leave the storm door open, with the screen door closed.
