Do you lock your door when you are at home?

I mentioned in TNZ that I usually leave my doors open during the day so that the cats can come in and out. Some people thought that this was a bad thing to do, while others have said that they do not lock their doors during the day.

I also will leave my bedroom window open during some summer nights to let in the cool air in.

So I am asking people here

1) Do you lock your door when you are home during the day?
2) Do you ever forget to lock your door at night?

I live in Los Angeles, so the answer is HELL YES! My doors are locked when I'm out, and the burglar alarm is on!

No, but it wouldn't be a big deal if I did. I keep it unlocked as long as I'm awake, which is sometimes past 3am anyway.

Yes, but only because it's cold outside right now. In the summer I don't.

Sure. One time I even climbed in that open window when I locked myself out, so it was lucky I remembered it had been open.

Yes and no. The front door is locked, but the door to the garage remains unlocked. I'm not comfortable with this as I grew up with everything having multiple locks and an alarm system, but I don't think we even know where the key is to our garage.

I'll unlock the door sometimes when I know someone is stopping by in the next hour or two.

Not that I know of. My husband is the one that checks and I've never found it unlocked in the morning.

Rarely. As I said I leave the door open for the cats. Before that I left them open for the children. When I was growing up my mother always left the back door open all day if she was at home.

2) Do you ever forget to lock your door at night?

My son goes outside to smoke. Sometimes he forgets to lock the door when he goes out after to smoke after I go to bed.

3) Do you keep your windows shut during the day?

Nope. During summer open windows are my air-conditioning.

4) Do you ever leave windows open at night?

Yes, when my bedroom is hot.

Yes. I'm not exactly living in fear of someone breaking into my house when I'm home during the day, but why not lock them? They're closed anyway, so might as well turn the lock.

If it is during the daytime, usually not. In the evening by myself, yes I lock it. If my boyfriend is home with me, I don't lock it. My habits also change depending on where I live...I live in an apartment now and I lock the door much more often than I did when I lived in a regular house in the suburbs.

2) Do you ever forget to lock your door at night?
No, I worry about it each night usually. I am paranoid of scary things in the dark. If I am home alone, I lock my bedroom door as well.

3) Do you keep your windows shut during the day?
If the weather is nice I will open them, but if the air conditioner or heater is on then no. I wish I could have them open more often but I freak out about spiders coming in. I am an arachniphobic and I have had some awful experiences with nests on my window sills so I unfortunately get very paranoid about it if a window is open.

4) Do you ever leave windows open at night?
Depends on where I am living and again, the spider thing. If it is a non-spider season and I am on a second floor or higher then I will leave it open a little. Usually not all the way because I get cold easily or because it sometimes causes me to wake up with a stuffy nose. Most of the time they are closed just because I forget to open them.

Never ever. I could not sleep if I weren't absolutely sure of that. Usually it's the last thing I do before going to bed.

No, I keep them open but only in the same room I am. For ventilation, I have vasistas over my windows, so it's not a problem.

No, never. Sometimes I keep the glass open but with the roller shutters closed. It keeps a bit of air circulation but it's still safe.

The door to the building is always locked, but I don't generally lock the apartment door until I'm in for the night. For some reason, I've always locked the apartment door at night despite the fact that for about 8 years I didn't have a key to it and just left it unlocked when I was out...

Sometimes. The building is secure though, so it's not like my apartment is open for the world to enter.

Weather permitting, no.

Weather permitting, I always keep my fire escape window (which is secured with a double-deadbolted metal gate) open for the cats to enjoy. Other than that, I don't have screens and live on the 3rd floor, so for the most part, they stay closed for cat safety. I do have a cople of expandable screens and a that I'll put in one of the living room windows to get a cross breeze and a double window fan for the bedroom. Smackheads aren't great climbers, so windows aren't a security concern on the 3rd floor of a flat-front rowhouse. I mean, if Spiderman wants to break in, I guess he can.

In my previous apartment I did because otherwise the door wouldn't stay shut properly. It was really annoying. Now, I will leave it unlocked unless I'm alone and want to shower. In the summer, I leave the door open because we have screen doors.

No. I check locks and that the stove and all the lights are off.

Depends on the windows... upstairs and attic stay open to let heat out in the summer, but ground-level, street-facing windows must be closed. No reason to encourage the casual criminal walking by.

Only in summer, and only if it's really hot. I live very near a beach and the breezes can get too cool sometimes.

It depends on what you mean by that. I live in an apartment and the doors are therefore designed in a way that you can only open them from the outside with a key if they're closed.
That said, I don't lock my door, it's just closed.

I never lock my door at night when I'm home.

It depends on the time of year. In the summer, it's open (i.e. tilted) most of the time. The rest of they year, I let in fresh air as often as possible. I live on the ground floor and it's relatively cool in my apartment.

Yes, when it's very hot in the summer and not too loud outside. But again, I only tilt the window.

We lock the doors all the time; sometimes in decent weather we leave windows open when we're in the room. Not at night, though. Some of our neighbors do; I wouldn't feel safe with the windows open while I sleep.

It's a safe village, but there are always nut jobs from other towns -- and sometimes there are people that everyone trusts that turns out to be a thief. That happened in a small town in Indiana. He was rather a pillar of the community and robbed all his neighbors and friends in a town where they went with their doors unlocked all the time.

Yes. I live in a quiet neighborhood in a city with a very low crime rate. But crazies rarely make appointments or pay attention to municipal boundaries. Better safe than sorry.

I do lock the doors when I'm home, simply because there are two doors in and out of the house and we go out through both, so rather than worrying about whether the other one is locked when we go out, I just keep them both locked.

When the kids are older and going in and out by themselves then I'll start to leave them unlocked again.

I don't like to leave them unlocked over night but it has happened a few times.

The windows are often open during the day, not usually at night though because I like to be able to regulate the temperature, so at night-time I run it through the air-con.
