Do you have an iPhone?

I don't understand why that Apple doesn't put a 3G chip into the iPod Touch for Internet. I know AT&T probably are begging for it. Imagine if they only got a quarter of the iPod Touch users to activate it.

Well, then it'd be an iPhone. That's the biggest difference between the two. Sure, the Touch has less RAM, and a bigger drive, and a worse camera, and a smaller battery, and no earpiece speaker, but the primary difference is the lack of the cellular modem and antenna. That's the only reason it's smaller, lighter, and cheaper (compared to the unsubsidized price of an iPhone).

Actually it be more like an iPad. I have the 3G iPad and I haven used the 3G yet. Just haven't had the opportunity to, every time I have used it I have had wireless.

I have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS and an iPad (not 3G, just wifi). Between these two devices most of my computing needs are taken care of at home and away from home. If I want to use my iPad in an area that does not have wifi I just fire up the MyWi app that turns the iPhone into a wireless hotspot. There is no need for me to double dip on the 3G plans.

iPhone is a fine product. It's the AT&T part that is awful. $90 for 450 minutes, 2GB of data, and texting? You have to pay $20 more for the privilege of using tethering, but no extension on the measly 2GB?

[Currently pays $70 for more minutes than I use (by a factor of 10), 10GB of 3G data (after that you're throttled to EDGE speeds, not dinged an insane amount of money) and I can use that 10GB however I want, be it with tethering, on-phone browsing, or whatever, plus unlimited texting.]

So... you want an iPod Touch?

I have an iPod Touch, I'm not talking about offline apps. If I had one, it would be to stream online radio, TV, surf the internet, GPS, etc. Touch has wi-fi, but Wi-fi isn't everywhere.

So, an iPod Touch with the iPad's wireless system?

Are you being obtuse for any particular reason?

Again, so it's perfectly clear to you: if I was going to buy an iPhone, it would only be because of the G3/G4 high-speed connectivity anywhere I want. However, to get that, I need to spend $100 a month and be bound to a three year contract.

No thanks.

Basically, you want the 3G/4G network without actually having to pay for it.

I have to say, I want the same thing.

Why would you need to spend $100?? About $60 will get you everything one would need and want. :wtf:

Really? Where are finding a data plan for an iPhone on AT&T for $60? 'Cause I want in.

Both James Bond and FordSVT are in Canada, beyond AT&T's filthy reach.

I don't have an iPhone, but I brought my unlocked Nexus One to Telus and signed a 1 year contract under the condition that they'd give me a retention package (otherwise I would have gone monthly) for $65. I only have 1GB a month, but even with heavy phone use and the lack of wifi at work I've never gone over. Heck, in Canada you can buy an iPhone directly from Apple unlocked and then bring it to whatever carrier you want. If you want it subsidized you have to sign a 3 year, but that's entirely optional.

Actually, in many ways Canada is way worse then the US when it comes to cellphones... 3 year contracts are standard and things like caller ID are extra. When I moved here I actually started to miss Verizon which I didn't think was possible.

Isn't iPhone going to start branching out to other carriers in the US sometime soon?

That's what I've been hearing. Or rather, that they will jump ship to be exclusive with someone else, like Verizon. AT&T's network is still shit, as far as I've heard.

I've been at AT&T customer since they were still Cingular, and I've never had a problem with my phone service, but I've never dealt with their cellular internet.

A Verizon iPhone has been rumored for a while, but personally I wouldn't really expect it until Verizon launches their LTE network in a widespread fashion.

On the plus side tethering does not cost $20 extra a month. On the TELUS network anyway, I don't know about Rogers or Bell

On Rogers you just need to be subscribing to at least a 1GB data plan (whether bundled with voice or not) to receive free tethering access.
