Do you have a favorite SHOT that makes you go whoa!

Do you have a favorite "shot" from all the ST movies or series? I don't mean a scene, i mean just a shot that when you see it you go, "Whoa!" or one that you just LOVE?

The shot that i just love is from Generations (yes, i know, you hate the movie)......the one where Soren is up on the mountain with his arms outstretched and the nexxus ribbon is approaching him. That shot just blows me away every time i see it.

Another one i love is from the new movie, the shot where the escape pods are leaving the Kelvin in front of the huge fireball.

They both just leave me in awe. Do you have any?

TMP - the pan under the E just as it goes to warp. It's the same shot they used in the first TUC teaser that they super-ed the images all over.

For pure effects, the aforementioned Nexus shot. Also, the EVA scene in First Contact, where we see them walking around on the hull.

But for emotional impact, this may sound weird...I know it was perhaps a second at most, but there was this bit during the Battle of Cardassia Prime, even before the Cardassian fleet has turned, where we see the losses all over the allied fleet--the Federation, the Klingons, the Romulans...but for just one second, we get another shot. We're on the bridge of a Cardassian ship that's being blown to pieces, and there's this Cardassian soldier trying in vain to shield himself from the oncoming fireball...

I think that said it all right there: that by this point, the Cardassians were every bit as much victims of the Dominion as everybody else, because as we know, the Dominion had decided their lives could just be thrown away without regard. I think I choked up a bit, personally--that was worth a thousand words.

^ That scene/shot you mention in FC, i love that one too. And after they pull back and you see just how huge the Enterprise is compared to the puny humans walking...

The BoC one...is that from DS9? I can't remember that, and if it is from DS9, that would be why.

I always loved the shot of the Enterprise, returning to spacedock, at the beginning portion of STIII. When it enters and all the people inside are viewing the patched damage to her is just very memorable. Particularly, the look on the face Janice Rand and the shaking of her head, just classic.

i like that one. actually, i love the entire sequence revealing the enterprise. its like the camera is making love to the ship.

Exactly. And the little upside-down trick, too. :)

Yes, it's from the last episode of DS9.

The end of the DS9 episode "Call to Arms", when the Defiant and Klingon bird-of-prey join the massive fleet as a signal that the Dominion War was upon us. It was the first time we'd ever seen an armada of starships like that.

I loved the shot of the Defiant/Rotarran too, it was amazing to see something like that on tv (the closest we got previously was the battle with the Borg at the beginning of First Contact).

It's not a flashy shot, but I always liked the end of "Family," when young Rene Picard is sitting under a tree looking up at the stars, "dreaming about starships and adventures..." And then we see a shooting star streak across the sky...or is it the Enterprise, off on its next mission? ~_-

Agreed, that was a very cool scene. I also remember another one as well. I always loved the scene when, during the end of the Mutara nebula battle, the Enterprise just rises up behind the Reliant. It just looked awesome with the light erupting behind both of them. Plus, I am an adamant lover of the older studio scale physical models for the effects; I really miss those days.

In the new film, I loved the shot of the shuttles escaping from the Narada at the very end of the opening sequence with the star in the background. Beautiful shot, strong emotion, good background music. The image of Kirk on his bike, pulling up to the Riverside Shipyards and seeing the Enterprise under construction was also absolutely wonderful.

I always loved the opening shot of the Borg cube in Star Trek: First Contact. It feels awe-inspiring -- huge and dangerous and inevitable and terrible.

The spacedock sequence in Star Trek: The Motion Picture probably goes on longer than it should, but I still absolutely love it. It captures the beauty, the excitement, the hope, the mystery, the joy of Star Trek so perfectly.

the one that really gets me is in Best of Both Worlds when Picard is getting Borg implants, and we see the close up of his eye.......wow

It's not my favourite movie, but it has a shot that gives me goosebumps every time. In Insurrection towards the end when the Enterprise is zooming up next to the side of the whatchamacalit - exploding thing.

Then it transports Picard at the last minute. Whoa!!

:techman:we like alot of the same ones.

i love the shot at the end of Fistful of Datas ...

I completely agree with both of these.

The shot from Generations is really good.

I've never really thought of Star Trek, even the theatrical productions, even the good theatrical productions, as having a particular strength in mise-en-scene, however. This is not to say they never succeed--they're usually quite competent, just not so awesome as to impress upon you, "the director did a great job here."

I'd like to say that the framing sequences of In the Pale Moonlight are well-constructed, however.

One of the final shots of "The Die is Cast," with Odo out of focus (and in a mirror?), is pretty good. Not sure exactly what it was supposed to represent, but it was technically well done.

And, of course, every shot of Remmick in "Conspiracy" is pretty much perfect. His head actually asploding is an example of the televisual medium at its best. There should be a :remmick: smiley.

i rewatched that one recently (i hadnt watched it since before the movie Generations) and i found that scene especially sad and touching now that Rene is "gone".

This is unfortunately true, but it's one of the areas in which the newest Star Trek film improves upon its originating material.

Yeah, it's so sad now...one of the (few) bright spots in Nemesis was the dialogue between Picard and Schinzon where they talk about looking up at the stars, "dreaming about what was up there, dreaming about...new worlds..." It's a powerful scene, and always makes me think back to the young dreamer in "Family."

I don't think anyone's mentioned TOS or VOY yet:

-From TOS, as the Fesarius approached the Enterprise, it got bigger and bigger until it dwarfed the ship and totally filled the screen!

Also, the Enteprise vs the Doomsday Machine. The Enterprise approached from the left, the giant Machine from the right, and the shots kept alternating between them as the music kept changing and building in intensity...

-From VOY, seeing Voyager crashing into the ice planet in "Timeless." I wasn't really wowed by the CGI used on the show, but that sequence looked amazing (the shot where we see the ship buried beneath the ice was cool too).
