Yeah the jokes were offensive and in bad taste. And yeah, considering their family-friendly image then Disney and Marvel are almost certainly right to disassociate themselves. But I hate the idea of this being seen as another "liberal scalp" taken by a right-wing conspiracy theory-pushing whacko.

There's nothing funny about the evil of pedophilia and rape. Gunn let that despicable crap out into the world. There's a price to be paid for it, and yes, liberals are just as guilty of offensive statements / behavior as anyone else, and should suffer the consequences when exposed, much like the Amy Powell situation at Paramount--

So making tasteless jokes on the internet years in the past when someone was going through an edgelord phase (he used to work on Troma films) is such an unforgivable offense that it completely invalidates them as a decent human being and they should be exiled from public society for the rest of their lives? Seriously? Do you seriously believe that dumbass, tasteless jokes are an unforgivable offense. That is such an insane overraction that is going throw so many decent people under the bus.

I have no problem with Gunn being held responsible for his conduct. The problem I have as that he was held responsible - in 2012. He was called to account for it, and he issued a heartfelt apology.

Rosanne has been mentioned. I accept that she was fired for her conduct. I would not be supportive of her being fired if her conduct had been 6 years ago, and she had been fired or apologised for that conduct back then and not continued that same behaviour unchecked, but today her conduct from 2012 was given as the reason for her firing.

It makes so sense. He apologized in 2012 and went on to direct two Marvel movies. Now that all that dirt is back he's fired?

Oh, yikes, I didn't even notice the transphobia in some of those tweets.

I'm still kinda torn here. On the one hand I like his Guardians movies, but that shouldn't be relevant at all. And I do find all of these tweets pretty damn terrible. On the other hand he did apologise, but only after getting called out for it just now. Then again his apology seems sincere and the tweets were a posted long time ago.
 
I haven't seen actual examples of things he posted, but there's a difference between making jokes that are offensive and poor taste, and making jokes that degrade entire groups of people.

If you look at South Park's history of their take on transgender issues, a lot of people would be really offended. It's changed recently but South Park's historical take on transgender issues was "No have babies, not a real woman". There is no 'Right not to be offended'. You do not have the right not to be exposed to views that are different from your own. There is a difference between making offensive jokes, and making jokes that reveal a real belief that entire groups of people are terrorists and apes.

The idea that people are censoring themselves online because they're afraid ten years from now there will be political trends that judge them horribly is a scary one. Majoritarianism is a form of totalitarianism.

Ten years. when was already in his 40s, so can't even claim to have been young and naive.

The great irony in all this is that he's the victim of the Liberal push (of which he was a part) over the past few years to destroy the careers of anyone who steps outside the bounds of what they have decided is right and wrong.

"Sadly" for Gunn, turns out it works on people like him too.
 
I've been quick to question the extra-judicial chracter-assassination-via-social-network, but I think this one is beyond the pale. The sheer volume of material Gunn spit out and the way it seemed to gleefully go after every PC sacred cow (I'm surprised he didn't sling the N word) is probably the worst thing he probably could put out there if he wanted to some day get a job for Disney.

Someone at Disney was asleep at the wheel in performing due diligence.

Let's face it. Hollywood works like a popularity contest. Whether he apologized or not, the public thinks he's a douchebag now, and that's bad for Disney's bottom-line.

Does it mean his career is over? Well, Mel "Sugart*ts" Gibson continues to get work, even directed a movie that got decent reviews (Hacksaw Ridge). But he's got his work cut out for himself to restore his public image.
