Suddenly my YouTube feed has been inundated with 20 minute videos essentially claiming DISC is going to ruin the world. There have been a good dozen of them now, all by different people but all saying pretty much the same thing. And they all make the same references:
  • Gene's Vision (™)
  • J.J. Abrams is evil
  • But not as evil as SJWs
  • If it's not safe and bland and dull, it's not "Star Trek"
And the comments on said videos are 10x worse than anything that's said around here.

I admit it's actually got me a little worried.

Why are you worried? Star Trek fandom has reacted this way to EVERY new Star Trek incarnation -- EVERY ONE.

The reaction the ST: D is nothing new.

Well social media takes pestilential culture to whole new level. I mean, we don't call it "going viral" for nothing. I'm just afraid the negativity will reach critical mass right around the premier and any legitimate discussion about the show gets drowned out. The old adage about 'any publicity is good' is only true to a point.

I suppose there's always the possibility that people might see it as "If the Trekkies hate it, it must be good!" But I doubt it.

You're suddenly inundated by those YouTube videos because the people running those clickbait channels have noticed that people who make shit up, like Mirror's Edge, and people who twist everything in the worst possible interpretation get lots of clicks. Then the promotion algorithm boosts those to people who watch other Star Trek-related videos. Meanwhile people who say reasonable things aren't making many videos.

Good thing they are not the target audience.

They're pathetic. I was on the CBS page on FB and the new promo has almost 700 likes and less than 40 dislikes...but the comments section? About 40 angry people. LOL

RAMA

Certainly the social media world has changed the landscape of marketing from the last time we did this dance, in 2001. There was lots of internet discussion about Enterprise, but little of it would have leaked outside to the muggles. People at large just didn't interact on the internet in that manner back then. Having said that, we are still talking about a vanishingly small percentage who will watch hate videos for upcoming TV shows, or read the comments section of Youtube to get their fill. Especially when the criticisms being levelled are so incredibly nerdy that they're never going to capture the interest of the mainstream TV audience.

As a comparison point, there are videos, blogs, podcasts, and much more all over the internet slagging off Game of Thrones every week, talking about how it ruined the books, that it's wrongly cast, wrongly directed, far too gruesome, not gruesome enough, an endless echo chamber of nerdcore criticism. And yet, it remains one of the most successful shows out there, and loved by millions.

I like to think of the complainers as analogous to the solar eclipse. For a brief period of time a tiny celestial body appeared to (on a narrow slice of the planet) blot out a gigantic celestial body. Then a few brief moments later.... poof...the gigantic celestial body returned to dominance.
Before the show is released, the incessant complaints will seem to darken enthusiasm, but once its released, they may still exist, but won't have the same power.

*Of course if the show sucks, then you can throw my analogy out the nearest airlock.
