News Discovery Twitter & Social Media Thread

This unlocked promo illustrates something I've been discussing in social media. The early promotional trailers all have early or temp sfx. This latest one finally shows off some of the polished work. Note the finer detail and grainyness of the black hole debris, and the more detailed Klingon ships.

I'm not noticing any difference personally.

but then again that is a tiny video. Why doesn't Instagram have a full screen button?

We may need a thread just for Jason Isaacs' tweets.

14 hr fight today. Finishing at dawn, soaked in sweat and fake blood, if I'm lucky. It's work, Jim, but not as we know it #StarTrekDiscovery

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

A new promotional video for Star Trek: Discovery has been released. Fortune Favors the Bold shows Michael Burnham going out on a...

And it has stand-up consoles that the actors were standing in front of in the pics from Variety.

I think we might see a Andorian use their famous ice powers on the show. Why else would a young ensign say "That's so cool?" We all know people in the future won't be using modern slang.:) I do like the nod to DS9 with the "Fortune Favors the Bold" line. I suspect this will be before the ship goes into a battle moment like on DS9. I got to say the bridge looks kind of cheesy and to old school for me. I wanted the bridge and the tech to sort of ape the TOS look but I wanted the bridge scene's to be more like the Kelvin Universe were it feels like a very busy and crowded place. That's something I have started to notice from the clips.

Or maybe they were nodding to Pliny the Elder (who used 'brave' and not 'bold', to be fair, but it's down to the translation of the Latin) who was referring to taking his fleet in to Pompeii to rescue his friends during the eruption of Vesuvius. I suspect this could be the usage - Do Lorca and the other Captain take their ships in to rescue the Shenzhou and her crew despite likely death?

Well, after seventy years or so I guess "cool" has become as ensconced in the American vernacular as stuff like "darn it." :D

I'm looking forward to seeing Lorca get his hands dirty. he seems like ur typical seasoned officer. I'm hoping he doesn't remind me of Robert Patrick's Colonel Sumner from Stargate Atlantis or Lou Diamond Philips's Colonel Telford from Stargate Universe. granted these are characters from a different franchise. I just want a Star Trek version of SG-1's Jack O'Neill.

Yeah, I'd love an O'Neill type in Trek. Or a John Crichton type. The Franchise is too tight-assed for that.

I don't know. He doesn't strike me as a funny guy in the things I have seen him in. The "cool" girl though strikes me as someone who might have a fun personality just from that clip which might be the first use of humor we have seen connected to the show. Also Doug Jones was funny in "HellBoy" and the fungus guy I know best from "Dazed and Confused" and he was able to be funny in that. Everyone I am very positive about knows can be funny is Rain Wilson as Mudd. Speaking of "Stargate" characters I kind of wonder if Mudd might be a Doctor McKay type for the show, only instead of science he instead has all sorts of different skills from his criminal background. Like McKay though I an see him swing from having a massive ego to tons of insecurity.

Also when it comes to comedy I don't know why I haven't thought about this is I wonder if this is a show that is going to poke fun at the history of Trek. Everyone has sort of conceited that job to "Orville" but this show can have some fun as well doing it if it wants. Granted if they did this then I think the show would go from what I see as "Battlestar Galatica" to "DS9" instead. Somewhat dark but also the funniest of all the Trek shows, though with a strong female lead "Buffy" might be a better example but I don't see them doing THAT much humor.

A few friends of mine into FX and production with some connections in the biz have noted the development of FX from the early trailers to the latest ones. There are several things in the first, otherwise great trailer that are clearly just temp work..a placeholder for promotional purposes. Remember Generations, STVI, STFC trailer? Using stock footage just doesn't cut it these days, audiences expect more.

Well let's see..Isaacs calls him "fucked up". He has a southern accent and has a secret weapons stash in a shielded locker..it sounds to me like they're definitely giving him some bad character traits not totally unlike a lot of Americans of a certain persuasion..

Looked pretty awesome in terms of special effects and I like the computer voice and it sets up what I think might be a kick-ass action scene. The Klingons as monsters still seems to be what they are going for. Still not sure about how I feel about that , overall. People sometimes complain about the old Klingons being one-dimensional but I don't want them to be that again only to change that Dimensional from Vikings who worship honor to brute warrior things. MIght make them scary but not sure if that will make them interesting as people. PLus I have the Jem'Haddar fear of having them to be hard to tell who is who because they all end up looking the same.
