Discovery Size Argument™ thread

The perspective is identical. The only thing off the pylons, as the top are perpendicular. I can't find any other details that aren't a practically perfect match.

That's the way the VFX artist would have done it, with the two ships meeting nose to nose, facing each other on the same horizontal plane.

We are never gonna figure size out from those images. We simply have nothing to go on. The best thing we have is the window and we do not even know how large that is.

Quick 5 minute back of napkin math...

Saucer rim of Discovery is 1 deck and roughly 5m tall.

Saucer rim of Enterprise is 2 decks, and if we assume that means it's 10m tall...I figure the saucer is in the area of 180m wide (rounded down a bit as I didn't bother to 100% Enterprise's perspective). With a 10% margin of error (reasonable), that gives a range of 198m to 162m. With a 20% margin (also reasonable) that gives a range of 216 to 144m.

EDIT: applying my method to the Discovery nets a figure roughly 20% off.

1701OG is 127m wide. Which, if that's still the case, would require my lazy math to be off by over 40%...which I don't think is likely.

The edge of the Discovery's saucer is about as thick as the OG Connie's.

It's probably laid out different internally which puts the single deck in the middle. Maybe something to do with the spinney parts top and bottom of it.

I don't know how accurate this connie model is, but the Discovery Render is from Eaglemoss

If the connie model is accurate, it's windows almost line up with Discovery's, and discovery's windows are not exactly center on the edge, they're slightly higher.

Thing is, even though the windows indicate that there are two decks in the Constitution saucer rim, in the traditional size it is not really possible.

Think however going off 1701's shuttle bay, that the Enterprise should be somewhat larger. Discovery is a bigger ship, but I think Enterprise is not as small as the comparison there. I'm not sure, though.

How much of a spore-drive ship is dedicated to non-livable area for mechanisms related to the drive, and the forest itself, might be questionable too. Maybe un-modified Crossfields are the the armed alternative to Ptolemy Class haulers or disaster relief craft (going off the shuttle bay/hangar).

I'm just going by the most common sizes given for the Connie, not the ones that make sense.

Considering how close in size the edges of the saucers are, it had to be on purpose. Seems too close to be a coincidence IMO.

YUP. You couldn't fit two TOS decks in the TOS ship either. The sets where, what, 10 feet tall? That's 6m of air right there. The hull can't be paper thin, right? Nor the decks themselves.

Except there's no hard reason for that to be so. It's not like there's a space Panama Canal that the ship won't fit through if its saucer is too thick. I think you *have* to treat it as coincidental unless explicitly stated otherwise.

At this point in time (and admittedly IMO), it makes less sense than my hypothesis of Enterprise and Discovery's decks being roughly the same height.

I mean when designing the Discovery, they may have used the TOS Connie as a reference.

They're even at the same angles.

Sure, Eaves (and whoever else had input on the design) used it as an artistic reference, but Eaves could have gone off on his own direction at any point when it came to scale. It's not like a lot of people care about that kind of minutae. The JJPrise was rescaled throughout its existence as needed to fit the composition of a given shot. Many ships before that have done the same particularly the Bird of Prey and Defiant.

The doors on earth space dock (till they got magically bigger for Enterprise D :D )

Until we get official numbers, I'm not imagining the DSC Connie being very much bigger then the TOS Connie.

I concur. She look very similar in size to TOS so I'm going to err on the fact that she's likely approximately the same size as she was in her original depiction.

Maybe they won't ever show them side by side. The only reason the defiant came in 4+ different sizes is because they didn't want it to look small next to certain other ships.

Stolen TARDIS technology. We know the Federation has it centuries later from the small ship the NX-01 recovered that once time. The one the Tholians were after.

You can probably find examples of sets not fitting in ships in every TV series not just Star Trek.

Hell the people working on DSC have already said their sets probably won't fit sometimes. It's just the nature of production.

Fun fact, IIRC the designers have said they have the interior of Discovery mapped out for writers to look at for when they want to add a new room or use an existing one, but if the story calls for a room that doesn't fit, they'll still make the one that doesn't fit.
