Discovery Klingons: Flat or Bumpy?

Klingons from 5 years before TOS should have foreheads that are...

  • Flat foreheads

  • Bumpy foreheads

  • Mix of both flat and bumpy foreheads

  • I don't care

Maybe Section 31 helps install a flathead Chancellor in the hopes that it would relieve tensions with the Empire.

And that turns against them when the flathead Chancellor turns out to be more brutal and conniving than any of the bumpies before him.
Perfect. And the reason they are more brutal and devious is because of their augmented human traits. They control the bumpies but also mate with them giving us the softer ridged movie Klingons. Then a bumpy purist movement rises and the flatheads and hybrids are wiped out leaving us with only the more babaric less cunning bumpies by TNG whom are not the best ship builders which is why there are so many 100 year old birds of prey still in service. :)

The Klingons should be the swarthy bearded rascals with arched eyebrows from TOS and definitely not turtleheads! Unless the producers don't care and ignore the continuity!

Lets hope they get the original fitting costume too instead of the loose baggy outfits The Klingons wore in Trials and Tribbulations for DS9!

I've watched Day of the Dove so many times... There's never a specific date of contact referenced.

Only that the Federation and The Klingon Empire had been at peace for three years, a treaty they had honoured to the letter! :wtf:

Again, my speculation is based on them throwing out most of the design, but not the stories and EVENTS of the previous series for the most part regardless if they had a widespread effect or not. Why? Because for the most part they've honored continuity in the past, and furthermore the whole premise for the new show is to be set in an event in continuity that was only referenced, but never seen. If that isn't respect for story continuity, I don't know what is.

Could they ignore the flatheads completely? Of course, they can do anything that they want. I haven't heard an argument of why they should want to or why it would be better to have one or the other type of Klingon. Assuming the Klingons will be the initial metaphor for 21st century humanity, it seems that they might need a varied species to accurately mirror our culture now. Once we get more info, all our guessing will be put to rest. For now, let's keep up the speculation because it's all we've got.
We need a Romulus and Remus in DSC thread next. This would be an example of the kind of continuity they might bend, to get cool races like the Remans, Jem'hadar, and Borg into the 23rd down the line even though all originated in the 24th. :)[/QUOTE

We can't have The Romulans appear at any time in this show because it would damage the continuity of TOS Balance of Terror!

Depends how you interpret canon, in my view the events in enterprise never existed and the new show runners would be wise to flush all that rubbish out of the nearest airlock.

Even if the absurd augment disease with its convenient 100 year time limit had really happened, then it would not be believable that Bashir wouldn't have known at least part of the reason they had no ridges, since it would be contained in medical records that he would have studied.

If the new show runners decide to ignore the enterprise revisionism, then they could come up with a much more imaginative (and believable) alternative reason if they do decide to address the question.

I like what I hear! I don't acknowledge the travels of Captain Henry Winkler either my friend! Although I did like The Borg episode a little...

I haven't posted much in years but I keep up with the board, and I just wanted to chime in with my wholehearted endorsement of this idea. It's exactly what Doctor Who did with the last couple Dalek stories--using a mix of Dalek designs from the original 60s look to the most current, including everything in between. It'd be a great little (slightly belated) 50th Anniversary present for the fans--a subtle acknowledgement that 'it's all true'.

Trouble was in that one they didn't explain why there Daleks from different eras roaming about the corridors on Skaro did they!

I'm fine with skipping the Romulans and using the Remans instead. Since most of Nemesis was throwaway, they could just reintroduce the Remans and even tweak their look to be slightly less nosferatu (but not too much less) and they already wear purple so they fit the decor of the TOS era :rommie:

I like the Trek VI minimalist Klingon foreheads the most. They have bumpy foreheads, to some degree, but normal eyebrows, teeth, noses etc.

My ideal look for the Klingons is what was in the Klingon propaganda video. They have ridges, but lack the long, unkempt, space viking hair that became common after TOS.

Yes, please! This will fill the void caused by the probably lack of Romulans and Cardassians, when it comes to quasi-fascists totalitarians!

Hail the Klingon Empire!

Give them a cleaner look and a more mischievous mind. Keep the ridges.

In fact, having rewatched the Enterprise two-parter, the impact of the augment virus is left somewhat open ended. Not everyone was affected, even if millions were. And a cure might have been found in the meantime.

I know the episode was intented as an (possible) explanation for the forehead issue, but it can safely be ignored if deemed necessary as, I believe, the writers intended.

How many times did we actually see smooth-headed Klingons? Just a handful of episodes in TOS. And the characters in DS9 didn't recognize them as Klingons when they time-traveled to the past. From this we can extrapolate that Smoothies were a small minority that happened to congregate in the sector where the 1701 was assigned, and that Knuckleheads were still the majority elsewhere. So it would be unfortunate if we didn't see any Smoothies, but it could easily be justified.

As a Vulcan would say: "Logic demands that there'd be some flat headed ones.... I mean fore-headed;.., I think."

Meh, Klingons should always have bumpy foreheads. Not their fault TOS didn't have a budget.
