Discovery itself

topcat

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Am I the only one thoroughly disgusted by the fact that they simply dusted off a pre TNG enterprise D ship sketch and reused it for discovery?

Using a real star trek ship would have been far far better. And besides there are SO MANY of canon ships that have never gotten much screen time, that they could have used anything say a Daedulus or hermes or saladin..

Eh, I'd probably be pretty cranky about ANY CGI ship. I love huge models! So fun to work on AND watch. I know it's expensive as hell, but good CGI isn't exactly cheap these days. Still, it's nice to see them even on a bargain basement show like "Red Dwarf" which went back to models.

The Discovery design was a proposed refit of the TOS Enterprise. Technically it is a canon ship, there was a model of it built and used in the background in spacedock for one of the films, as well as being in a starship junkyard (or maybe the battle of Wolf 359 aftermath) in TNG.

I, for one, really like the design and can't wait to see more of it!

The Daedalus-Class should've been used in ENT.

The design is... interesting. It probably looks terrific from certain angles and I'm looking forward to seeing proper finished footage instead of some rushjob test footage.

from what ive seen, its nothing more then a half assed attempt to put a D7 engineering section onto a federation saucer.

Anyone disgusted by the design of a fictional object, should probably find something more constructive to do with their time.

Using a real star trek ship would have been far far better.

It has a saucer, secondary hull and two warp nacelles. Not sure how you get any more "real" than that?

The design actually makes a lot of sense to me if, going by her name, she is a deep space explorer. The saucer is for main command and control, crew quarters and facilities, as well as some research and analytical functions, whilst the drive section is for main reactor and shipboard systems, fuel tanks (which they would need a lot of), cargo storage (again what they would need a lot of), hangar decks, manufacturing facilities (to replace shuttles, torpedoes, equipment, etc, which would be needed on long-haul missions), all of which has ample space in the Discovery-type, unlike the top-heavy Galaxy-Class of the slim line Constitution-Class.

Seeing some laughable speculation about what went into the design process here.

"Let's just dust off this old sketch and add some knobs."

No, it doesn't bother me. But to be frank ship design is pretty low on my priorities for this show, and the design is at least familiar of something.

As always, "real Star Trek" is the red flag phrase. #truescotsman

I actually like the design. Although I would not have liked it as a refit for the Enterprise if Phase II had gone ahead, but for the Discovery itself I am happy this design will see the light of day. I just hope we also see a Daedulus ship on the show.

One of these days I'd love to see a post that isn't just a complaint-filled rant of whatever happens to be ticking you off at the moment.

So as I understand it, you're "thoroughly disgusted" that they recycled an existing asset instead of recycling an existing asset.

Makes sense.
