Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

Orville was light and funny with a lot of heart.

Only seen the first episode of The Orville so far, thought it was okay. I plan on watching both shows. I hate comparing the shows, as both are different in terms of their aspects with their worlds and what we know about them. I think Orville will have a bit more comical elements than Discovery.
Given Orville's ratings I wouldn't hold out much hope of that.
What ratings? We have seen the Orville, its no way safe from the ax yet. Its kinda "Meh" and while the 2nd ep is a vast improvement on the pilot, its not a massive hit or anything.
What do ratings have to do with it being better?
It wasn't the humor that bothered me, as infantile and ill timed as it sometimes was, it was just the sheer level of corn. All the farmers in America couldn't produce the amount of corn in that show.

While I agree that it isn't safe from the ax yet, with it moving to Thursdays. It was Fox's biggest drama premiere since Empire and the numbers for it are very, very good.
It is showing there is a market for fun sci-fi.
i liked it and I hope it does well. It's not Walking Dead or Game of Thrones in awesomeness but it entertained me for an hour and best of all I didn't have to pay to watch it. It has a bad time slot right now and too easy to be pre-empted by Football so I am glad they are moving to Thursdays. But Fox lets me watch it online and I just need to watch commercials (again for free) so that is how I will enjoy the show.
Maybe Orville has no baggage and is easier to accept. It has a TNG feel but within TOS undertones. Really have to wait for a few DSC episodes...
That is part of it. I really have wanted a Trek reboot for a while, something that can stand on its own.
Orville appeals to those who miss 90s Trek. Because that's what it looks and feels like with all the lame Seth MacFarlane jokes crammed into it. It's MacFarlane's TNG fan film.
Actually it DOESN'T feel like 1990ies TNG Star Trek to me with regard to the characters (as they're not all uni-thought or Utopian), pompously proclaiming how the Federation way is always the superior, enlightened, 'right' way); and I love the fact there more like TOS era characters that TNG era characters.
The set design and color scheme evoke more of a sense of TNG era Star Trek in that aspect, and that's fine.

Me ether and so far it has had no real compeititon since it was one of the very first falls shows to start. We'll have to see what happens after the move and when more shows start to start

The Orville ran against Sunday Night Football, which got 20 million viewers. I would call that real competition.

The ratings will of course still go down drastically on Thursday. The Orville will be without its NFL lead in, which helped the ratings a lot. Gotham just gets nowhere near the same ratings and is a much worse lead in show. The Orville can survive a big drop though. A 1.1 rating is likely enough for a renewal.

Football and a scripted show are very different. If you wanted something non-football there were not many other options at the time from other scripted shows. That will change over the next few weeks. and yes the football lead-in did help a lot just like it likely will this sunday for discovery.
