Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

Some people just need to get over themselves. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It doesn’t make it better than anyone else’s. YouTube comments are the epitome of not understanding that.

The standard "i hate this its not start trek" (literal quote) comments aren't what has angered me so. A significant portion of the reactionary elements in this equation are treating this show like another one of their pet political targets, and acting accordingly. They're unapologetically saying things and using language that would probably get a person banned from this forum in an instant.

Calling them down wouldn't help anything. Screaming at them would just strip my metaphorical throat out. So maybe I can help bring their worst nightmares to life, by helping support the continued production of this series.

Meh I don't like the Orville. It feel like a cheap knock off of TNG with Voyager level of writing. STD on the other hand is slowly growing on me. Honestly I'm not sure why people are upset, these are imperfect humans who don't like each other and plus they are in the middle of a war. Isn't this what people said ST needed since Voyager.

Fun game, rate the six Star Trek lead characters in terms of how interesting they are, charismatic, fun to watch, etc:

1. Kirk
2. Picard
3. Sisko
4. Janeway
5. Archer
6. Burnham

Whoa, that worked out well.

its better on discussion boards like this cause real conversation happens. not all forums are equal in this but i happen to think this site is one of the best.

simple comment threads like youtube tend to descend into crap way quicker

Yeah but Star Trek has always been Liberal. What changed to make people think different.

dunno about tossing the word liberal around per say. i mean you ARE right but it was different through the 90s and even early 2000s. the identity politics werent as harsh or divisive.

there is a great episode where fundamentalism meets secular education on ds9. i happen to think ds9 presented both ideas quite fairly with good justification for either side all while highlighting that violent extremism is bad either way.

always appreciated treks ability to, sometimes, not quite be a liberal show but high minded enough to just aptly present the complexities of an issue.

You must have been young. Google OJ simpson Trial and Rodney King. It has always been this bad.

there are ALWAYS going to be extreme examples. that was the trial of the century.

my father is a very very conservative guy and was never "bothered" by anything about star trek. i know plenty of conservatives and liberals who werent bothered by "liberal" or "conservative" shows ( outside news and political shows )

Even Seinfeld said things they did on Seinfeld just couldnt fly these days. the utter hate over regular shows has exploded. and was not nearly like this through the 90s or early 2k's

The first two episodes aired on Sunday after football games. Even the most optimistic of people expected a big drop after the move to Thursday.

Very poorly is an exaggeration. There was the drop of course between episode 2 and 3, but it has stabilized since then:

The ratings are not great, but if they stay where they are right now a second season is probable. Fox has a bunch of worse shows and there is also the MacFarlane factor.
You realize that site just shows "live" ratings right?

Orville is doing insanely well in Live +7 from everything that's been said.
