Diet & Fitness Support Thread

Well, I haven't checked into this thread in quite some time, mainly because I really slacked off over the summer. The slacking is over!

My wife and I have decided to start a new regime together. We want to start having kids next year and my wife really wants to be as healthy as possible before we try to conceive so we have made a pact that we are only allowed to eat poorly on holidays (that means I won't be having any booze until October :(). We’ll still allow ourselves the occasional cheat but for the most part we will be trying to eat clean.

Last week I ate great but only made it to the gym three times as I ended up working overtime a couple of times. So far this week has been better. I know that I’ll need to put in some overtime tonight so I went for a run at lunch. When I go to the gym tomorrow I will have met my target of hitting the gym 5 times a week (3 days of weights and two days of cardio).

Aside from my love of beer and wine I have always eaten pretty well because I don’t really like junk food all that much. However I’ve tweaked my eating habits now based on some reading I’ve done over at the bodybuilding.com forums. I now make sure I eat a well balanced meal 60 to 90 minutes before I workout consisting of .25g protein/lb TBW (TBW=Target Body Weight) and .25g carbs/lb TBW. Immediately following my workout I have a shake consisting of .25g protein /lb TBW and .50g carbs/lb TBW. I won’t attempt to explain the rationale behind this because I wouldn’t make any sense but if you are interested the relevant info can be found here: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=272067

So far it seems to be working out pretty well for me. I've had lot of starting and stopping at the gym lately but I'm hoping it sticks this time. The good thing is that my wife is very determined to be super healthy and fit so her support should help a lot.

I was pretty much convinced I'd killed it. :(

I'm substituting swimming for running to get my knees rehabbed. I'm back at the gym taking classes after a year of slacking.

^Well I haven't been checking in because I'm kind of embarrassed by all my starts and stops. Congrats on going back to the gym. Keep us posted!

Yesterday I made to the gym for the 5th time this week. I did lunges for the first time in quite a while and could definitely tell I am not in peak condition at the moment. After the second set the muscles in my butt started cramping up!

Hello, fitness chickens. I packed all my gym gear in an honest belief that I would use it on my week-long trip to Ohio last week ... but instead I came down with a horrible cold during the trip out there, and now I'm home being a complete sickie. :(

The only upside is that my throat is so sore I can barely eat, so I doubt I'll gain any weight as a result of the lack of exercise. Bleahhh.

Given the choice between having a soar throat and not being able to exercise or being able to exercise and eat I would definitely choose the latter. Hope you feel better soon.

Went to yoga class today. On Wed, I've got my first water aerobics class. I signed up to hang out with the little ole ladies and to take it easy on the knee.

I've never really eaten "clean." My metabolism doesn't require it.

But I need to be eating more and better food. It's really diminishing my energy levels. I've just been too lazy too cook real food lately.

Good workout for me today. I increased my weights on chest and triceps and had great energy. Cardio tomorrow.

Back from the doctor. I am now armed with antibiotics for my strep throat. Hopefully I'll start feeling better soon ... this is getting really old after more than a week! :(

^Strep throat is not fun. I had it once when I was about 21 and it sucked! I hope you feel better soon

I had a good run on the treadmill yesterday. 30 minutes of speed intervals. Today it's shoulders and back.

What can I say, I have a good immune system. I can count on one hand the number times I've been truly sick in the last 10 or 15 years.
