Diet & Fitness Support Thread

I joined a new gym today. It's small, but it's right by work and open 24 hours. It'll work out a lot better than my current gym.

Congrats!! A new gym can breathe some fresh life.

Last night was a great one for chest. I could tell I was "in the zone". I did a fairly easy 4 reps with 405 on the bench press, and decided to jump to a one rep max of 435 which I succeeded in lifting! I'm only 20 pounds away from my best ever.

Really trying to get back to the gym. Monday I went and had a good 50 minute work out on the arms, shoulders and chest. Today went and did the legs and back for 45-50 minutes. Felt great afterwords.

So I am extending my mass/strength schedule a little longer due to some missed time in Dec. I am only taking 5-6 supplements currently but my strength continues to increase! part of the reason is because I have no real aches/pain, and my joints feel great.

Tonight I worked shoulders only. On my overhead smith machine press, I worked up to 315 for 6 then 7 reps in my middle sets (I did 5 sets and a warm up), AND for the first time that I can remember I worked up to 335 for 3 reps! I was pumped. My other exercises were equally good, and I finished off machine shrugs with 10 plates.

I was going to go running today but instead joined my 10-year-old in an afternoon of rollerblading, which I haven't done in years. :D

I was appropriately careful and put on tons of pads, etc. ... but I got overconfident after 45 minutes or so of practicing front & back crossovers. (I used to play the defensive line in hockey when I was in college ... um ... mumble mumble odd years ago.) So when I got hot I took off JUST the elbow pads (annoying things) and sure enough, the very next thing I did was trip myself while skating backwards and crash down on my right elbow.

OW. Serves me right. I have about 6" of scraped raw skin and some lovely bruises.

What a DOPE I am. At least I served as a great model of what NOT to do for my son. :o

Well, I'm back at it as well. I pretty much took the whole month of December off so that combined with a one week cruise over Christmas saw me go back up to 187.

The good news is that my shoulders seemed to have benefited from the extra time off and are feeling much better. I went back tot he gym on the 5th of January and I'm back down to 182 as of this morning. It shouldn't be long before I'm back under 180. My strength hasn't really diminished either so I'm pretty happy about that too.

Well, this looked like a good place to talk about this...

Let's see, I'm down 11 pounds.

I've had thyroid trouble for years and after being such an athletic teenager/young adult, it was hard when I started gaining weight without knowing why. After being diagnosed, I felt a bit better but I still had some weight to lose. When I first started on the synthroid it seemed to help right away and then for some reason, it just stopped working. Everything the doctor put me on didn't seem to help. I actually quit going to the doctor about it. Before everyone starts scolding me about that part, I did some of my own research and found that one of the biggest factors in hypothyroidism is lack of iodine. So, I started taking kelp every day a couple of months ago. That and trying to be a bit more active. To date I've lost 11 pounds when I hadn't lost anything in YEARS. It's not that I am - nor have I been - really obese or anything, I just haven't been able to lose anything. And what do you know, I go the natural route and it starts to work!! :bolian::bolian:

Good for you, kitkat! You must feel great. :)

I'm down a couple of pounds and getting in much better shape, which is all good ... I'm just really happy to be active again after some long months of annoying injuries.

Awesome. Keep it up!

I've got a Thyroid problem too and after the initial diagnosis it took a few years to dial in the correct dosage. Don't give up on the doctors just yet!

Thanks RAMA and TJin. I do feel much better....and I intend to only get much better.

TheSeeker (love your name btw, the books are great), the thing is, I was diagnosed over 10 years ago and have been to several different doctors, even a couple of different endocrinologists and none of the "drug" stuff was working. This is the first time in 10 years that I have actually felt better and lost a measurable amount of weight, so I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth. I've found something that works for me. And I'm ECSTATIC that I don't have to take prescription meds to feel this way. :bolian::bolian:

Good luck, CD! :) I'm sure you'll do great.

I'm just trying to get back into any kind of running shape with this hip injury of mine ... I'm back up to 2 miles but I'm being really slow and careful. It still hurts if I don't keep my pace perfectly straight, so I shuffle along like a geriatric patient. But it's better than sitting on the couch gaining weight!

OK, so I'm in the middle of week four of a pretty tame weight lifting regimen. Why is my weight up 10 pounds over when I started?

What have you been eating? And have you measured to see if you're losing or gaining inches?

If your waist is the same but you weigh more, you're probably gaining muscle. If you're putting on inches all over, though, you're most likely eating too many calories.

TJ - I hate to sound like this, but.. it's not an injury, it's arthritis, and it's chronic. Please stop running and do something else.

I signed up for a 5K today. I have 16 weeks to train, and the program's free. :techman:

Kickass! I'm doing a 5k run the 2nd week of April.

As for my diet and weightlifting routine, I came down with a bad cold or whatever this week. I was able to do my Monday workout, but not yesterday or today. so my eating is off and my lifting and running will be off this week. I decided I just won't count this week as part of my 14 week program and will just make next week week 3 instead of this one.

Could be muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. Or it could just be water weight. 10 lbs in 4 weeks is a pretty steep increase, so water would be my first guess.

Unless you're morbidly obese, though, I'd ignore the scale. Worry more about your Body Fat Percentage and how you look in the mirror. Those are more accurate measures of your health.
