Did Chakotay and Janeway ever have secret romantic feelings for one another

Chakotay seemed to have pretty strong romantic feelings for Janeway and pretty much revealed them in "Resolutions"
I'm going with what Robert Beltran said in a interview, Chakotay was never "into" Janeway. And in the case of Resolutions it was simply she was going to be the only girl in town.

I think the flirtation was probably being extended to most of the females on the ship to one degree or another with the exception of a few, like Belanna who was a personal friend. I have always though that if Chaotay had a lover among the crew it would have been from the Maquis segment and they would have kept it private.

I have trouble believing that Chakotay would be celibate for multiple years because he was pining away for Janeway.

They certainly seemed to have an Adama/Roslin thing in Resolutions. Only they weren't close enough to the end of humanity to drop rank and act on it.

I don't think Chakotay would have 'stayed celibate' though TV characters do that all the time when pining after a romantic interest. But I think if the crew were ever put in a situation where rank ceased to matter, like if they had decided to stay behind in The 37s, they would have gotten together.

And I think Chakotay did 'Stay celibate' for most of the TV series except for his alien flings like memory erasy girl, not because he was pining for Janeway, but because he was the commanding officer of every other woman on the ship. It's likely he had a series of one night stands with other aliens they met on their journey.

Yep, there was definitely chemistry but the dream of a romance had to be let go after Resolutions...kind of a shame to me because although in normal circumstances it would feel inappropriate for a captain to pursue romance with someone under their command, the Voyager situation was different. Accepting they may spend their whole lives on the ship, it would surely be okay to bend the rules on that. If the writers had explored it, the positives and negatives of Janeway and Chakotay being in a relationship could have been a great source of interest with interpersonal conflict and ethical questions over the seasons.

But would that be a Maquis rule? My impression is that Chakotay never in seven years thought of himself (or the rest of the Maquis) as "Starfleet."

I tend to disagree with that. In 'Bliss' for instance, where the telepathic space monster was giving the crew "everything they ever wanted," Chakotay was chuffed to be offered a full reinstatement to Starfleet upon returning to the Alpha Quadrant.

^ Was that Chakotay's life dream, or was it something that the monster feed into him to be blissful about?

I can't recall the episode title, but there's a scene in Janeway's office where Janeway says she thinks of the Starfleet and Maquis as one crew, and Chakotay comes back with that he doesn't.

...Even if after almost 3 years spent in the DQ, Chakotay was still interested in her and he clearly was, it seems to me that Janeway didn't share the same interest in him.

I agree... and I just made a query in my season 3 thread about this, but figured I'd wait until I was done watching the show and pose the question again. (and then I found this thread... I'll quit looking now; don't want to spoil anything I still have left unspoiled for the show.)

And then, there was "Resolutions". Even if after almost 3 years spent in the DQ, Chakotay was still interested in her and he clearly was, it seems to me that Janeway didn't share the same interest in him. Indeed, during the supposed 3 months spent on this unknown island, absolutly nothing happened between them and God knows how Chakotay tried to initiate a romance or something. Janeway was stayed stone-faced or almost from the beginning till the end, refusing to answer Chakotay's advances, even after having resolved to be infinitely cornered on this island. Maybe she would have eventually had a change of heart/mind after even several months but nothing is less safe!...
Resolutions marked this "ended even before having begun" situation.

Well, “still interested in her” suggests Chakotay had some ongoing campaign to win Janeway’s heart prior to “Resolutions” on Voyager, which there wasn’t. Other than a few admiring looks, there weren’t any overt indications of his interest in Janeway. They weren’t even on a first name basis until “Resolutions”! I think people forget that Janeway was engaged to Mark back home and she hung on to that (very openly to Chakotay in S1 Elogium) until… about another year in S4. (the reason is a spoiler, so this is all I’ll say) Other than some playful flirting, I don’t think Janeway ever seriously considered Chakotay in terms of a boyfriend or mate at all prior to being marooned with him. Yes, she was tactile with him, but also with other officers and crew members.

Anyway, so I thought “Resolutions” was a pretty good depiction of a woman realizing a guy has interest in her and she’s not sure what she thinks about it. Of course, there was their difference in approaching the challenge as well. She was driven to try to find the cure. He just wanted to make a comfortable home. To some extent that difference surfaces on the ship as well.

But there is no doubt that when they finally talk about it, that Chakotay touches her heart with his story, indicated by her offering to him her hand. Mulgrew even said in an appearance she made with Beltran (2013 Las Vegas on Youtube), “Remember that episode where we were falling in love on the planet?” So Janeway definitely began to consider him to some degree romantically from that point. To my mind, that wasn’t “the end of J/C”, it was the beginning.

“Coda” shows us that Chakotay still has strong feelings for Janeway. I would also like to point out that Janeway’s suggestion at the end, of going for a moonlight canoe ride on Lake George with champagne is a rather romantic setting for someone who “doesn’t share the same interest”… :-) Just sayin’…

There were some fans who speculated during the run of the show (at this point) that they could have been having a very discreet romantic relationship back on the ship. I’ll stop here, CM, and we can discuss further as you watch more episodes and the topic pops up again.

I agree with this. A different time and a different place Janeway might have explored her feelings toward Chakotay romantically. Part of why she gave herself permission to pursue a relationship with Michael Sullivan was because there was no one in the crew a Captain could be with. I think it was funny how she altered Sullivan, tweaked him here and there. It was only when she accepted that isn't how real people work that she simulated actual humanity.

In Endgame when Admiral Janeway visits Chakotay's grave, I think that scene revealed how much she did feel for him. I know she spoke of how he had to live all those years without 'her' , without Seven. We have to go by the story and it is that Chakotay and Seven developed this great love. I however interpreted that Janeway felt a loss too, more than the words that separated Janeway and Chakotay as Captain and Commander.

I think Chakotay may have been somewhat interested as he looked rather smitten when Janeway was talking about receiving a "Dear John" letter.

Though she put it off or may have not noticed.

If Janeway had sex with HoloChakotay... It would have been the same HoloChakotay that seven had sex with, that Tuvok created for his Maquis Insurrection Adventure... Which makes Janeway and seven sisterwives, and Tuvok their fatherinlaw.

Kinky.. Holo T'Pel would be their motherinlaw?

It's weird that Seven had sex with a holoVersion of a real person, not in a real relationship with her. That is wrong.

Leah Brahms was high up enough in the foodchain that she would have made it illegal for men to screw her lightbulb likeness, after she caught Gordie falling in love with her doppleganger.

(One (perverse) theory is that that's still holo-Leah in All Good Things, and not the real McCoy.)

Nothing happened after Deanna found Barclay casting her as the goddess of love, Quark had to get sneaky to measure and make his own Kira Hologram, however the entire cast had holographic stand ins in Our man Bashir after that transporter accident stranded their consciousnesses in holoform.

Although as a Doctor, Bashir would have had permissions to use real people as holograms, for his work, but not for his play, which means that Julian was being a very bad boy.

I remember the TNG episode and I kind of got her reaction to Geordi, she was independent to the hologram and married. On the other hand Geordi had created a fantasy aspect to the practical relationship he needed from Leah. It was like a private fantasy exposed. Yet the full on simulation a holoprogram can make something would take it to a weird level if you knew.

(I don't know my DS9 as well..)

Yeah you would think there might be some ethical terms of agreement with holoprograms if they weren't strictly private. When would a private recreation compromise real life? Maybe if it didn't then it would be like other harmless fantasies..

(true) Leah mistakenly thought that her "copy" was being used for porn.

If that was true, then her initial reaction was weak.

Geordie could have been kicked out of Starfleet.

DS9 is good, and then after season 2, it's really good. :)

There's no reason you shouldn't get around to it eventually. :)

I would imagine in a society with holodecks there would be some kind of rule against creating holograms of real living people without their consent.

It seemed to me that Seven never experienced sex whether with (holo or real) Chakotay. However, she (and only that) experienced the art of kissing with both... but maybe, I'm wrong.

I always thought that she didn't have sex with the hologram, she was just learning about all that. It would have been a huge leap. Perhaps if she kept going there longer eventually it may have gotten to that point. However I wonder what the real chakotay would say if he knew about her program.

Wait, now that I think about it didn't the doctor know about her holo-Chuckles? He probably should have been like you know that's against the rules
