Did Chakotay and Janeway ever have secret romantic feelings for one another

Did Chakotay and Janeway ever have secret romantic feelings for one another and are they dating in the Voyager novels?
Who knows what they felt. There was a flirtation but Janeway clearly was not going to get romantically involved

In the novels....

Spoiler

yes they are together

^It seemed like the writers teased us with the possibilty.

@Refuge , is your avatar picture an out-take. I don't recall any episode where they were cuddled up like that?:)

It looks like a shot from "EX POST FACTO", right after they use the Maquis trick to get past the Numiri and Janeway says that's one trick he can't use when they get back, with him saying he says more.

Oh I'm sorry I can't verify it. I did a search for happy Janeway and it came up! You know I'm not sure now if it is an actual screen shot. Yet I've always noticed how hands on Janeway is. Not at all offensive but almost nurturing.

Kate Mulgrew and the showrunners felt that it would be inappropriate for Janeway to get romantically involved with someone under her command.

That seemed to be the case in all of the Trek captains/commanders. And yet . . . many fans are only willing to question why Janeway didn't get involved with Chakotay - someone who was clearly under her command. Why her?

I always thought Picard was too Beverly with Beverly, if you know what I mean.

Janeway was at a real disadvantage in that she didn't have a sweet little thing waiting for her when she went home every few months. She had to be creative on the Holodeck. Shame really because she and Chakotay were well matched.

Janeway stuck on a ship for potentially 70 years and meant to use a dildo or the holodeck
Picard stuck on a ship for 15 years and meant to use a blow up doll or the holodeck
Kirk stuck on a ship for 5 years and meant to use a blow up doll or the holodeck
Archer stuck on a ship for 4 years and meant to use a blow up doll or the holodeck or Porthos
Yeah running Starfleet (where you can be away for years) like a present day military with human 18th century fraternisation rules makes a lot of sense...right?

Well, Picard did get freaky with that one officer. You know the one, he played his "flute" for her in the bowels of the ship.

What about that Voyager episode where Chakotay and Janeway contracted that disease and had to be left on that planet. it was obvious that Chak was developing feelings for her and I could swear that even Janeway started considering it as well, right before they were rescued/cured.

Being in a relationship with someone under your command is never a good idea.

Not only can it affect the judgment of the commanding officer, but if the relationship turns sour, it can be a REALLY difficult form of workplace romance.
That is looking at things in the Star trek universe from a narrow minded Terran perspective. Colonel Shran served with his lover, it was probably an Andorian norm to do so. Vulcans, due to their biological imperative, probably did the same. Also Klingons, (DS9 Soldiers of the Empire) warriors served their par'mach'kai'.
If the Federation is just a complete galactic version of North American culture might as call the series Life in the USA in the 23rd century.

I guess to really answer the question, I think Janeway did have secret romantic feelings for Chakotay but she was never going to let them develop beyond that. It's like when you are in a relationship, if you are drawn to another you just don't flirt, you don't share a lingering look, you know better. I also believe Chakotay felt attracted to Kathryn.

EXACTLY and that's why, there is a very strict policy of non-fraternization for the workplace. That's why, I was glad that Janeway/Chakotay remained a platonic & professional, relationship! :techman:

That being said, nothing prevented them , in particular Janeway from taking lovers or dating other people ... as long as the candidates were outside the crew, in order not to interfere with her captain's position and decisions she could take within the framework of her function. And besides, she did it with Sullivan, Jaffen and almost with Krashyk.

And to end, in the hypothesis that the romance between Chakotay and Seven is very brief (= that it ends even before having begun seriously) and that the former Maquis rebel/XO decides to turn again to Janeway, I don't see why the latter should accept to play the spare wheel -> seriously, how someone who has a such strong moral sense as Janeway, could accept to play the substitutes, without counting the 2 "betrayals" commited by Chakotay 1) if Janeway really was the love of his life, why did he even begin a romance with Seven in the first place, promising her to be always present by her sides, instead of waiting... like Janeway did stubbornly ; 2) that Chakotay takes seriously - or not - his relationship with Seven, why not to have spoken about it to Janeway, not only as his superior officer, but as his friend and as Seven's mentor (and even surrogate daughter) too?! I mean, he and Seven were already in their 4th date, maybe that it was time to inform her.

So, yes, maybe Janeway & Chakotay felt something for each other (and besides, they openly flirted in the beginning of their relationship), at first but, it was fast transformed into a beautiful friendship (which all the same suffered after the events of Scorpion and Equinox) and I don't see why they should destroy what they havebe to be romantically involved.
By the way, it is clear for me that, on certain points, they were and will never be on the same wavelength.

If Janeway was the love of his life why should he potentially spend 70 years pining after someone who won't give him the time of day? The crew were going to be stranded for 70 years in universe, the fact it only took 7 years, well 7 is still a long time.
