Did anyone here wanted Star Trek to fail?

I was certainly not interested in seeing XI be a big success. Not only do I dislike the idea of recasting TOS, but more importantly, this movie is yet another example of the vile practice of rehashing that permeates Hollywood.

I can't argue with financial success, however. Horse shit in shiny packaging is obviously quite lucrative.

You can include the new movie in that. Although I was not impressed during my one and so far, only viewing. Watching it was an emotionally empty experience... George Kirk, Vulcan, Amanda... was I supposed to care when each of these perished? Because this old timer came away with nothing. I didn't much care for this alternate universe and would have preferred to see such blanks in the established timeline filled in. The writers created an uninspired villain and had him clear away any troublesome continuity that didn't fit into their plan, giving Nero the kind of importance he simply didn't deserve. For me, that spoilt what should have been a straight forward TOS origin story.

As with Enterprise, I'd rather have no (new) Trek than bad Trek, but it's indeed just a movie, not terrible and is gaining fans rather than losing them. I'll always have the old series to enjoy.

Nice to that old extremist "No Trek > Bad Trek" line trotted in such a stealthy way. As in "I'm the supreme authority on what is good and bad Trek". Basically accepting that view point against ENT, while conducting a witch-hunt against those who hold such a view regarding STXI. Ah, you've got to love accepted wisdom...

It is not that I'm rooting against "Star Trek"--which is the assumption of a lot of previous posters to this thread. I was rooting against any sort of recast or rebooted Trek, which to me is not and will not ever be, "Real" Trek.
I would honestly have preferred to just read new novels as they came out and waited, however many years it took, for someone to take a new stab at a fresh take on "Prime Trek". I'm still waiting for that, because I assure you that it will, eventually, take place.
(maybe not in my lifetime but...oh buggerall.)

Good thing it didn't because you'll not see another movie with the TNG cast again (they screwed themselves over with NEMESIS, and I mean they, Stewart and Spiner are actors, not writers. Stick to your first, best destiny).

Maybe in 10 years, after 2 or 3 more JJ Trek movies, JJ will be nice enough to tackle TNG.

Unless some Hollywood director, that hasn't been born as of today comes along in 25 years AND has a few hit movies under his belt AND finds TOS DVDs in his grandpa's cabinet that was left to him AND begs his studio to let him direct a new version of TOS, continuing the 5 year mission, the BEST you're going to get is Cawley and crew (which is not a bad thing).

1) the actors are too old.

2) they're nice enough -- the characters... but they aren't "eternal" like the Kirk/Spock bunch.

Pardon me, but where did SheliakBob say anything at all about TNG or the TNG cast?

Again, I think you may be reading in things which SheliakBob never said.

One thing he did say was that he was not in favor of a recasting of TOS, and another was that what he would like to see eventually is a new story or series of stories (presumably in a new setting and featuring a new crew?) taking place in the Prime timeline. Where you're getting that he was asking for more TNG or a new version of TOS is escaping me, but it's nowhere in what he wrote here.

I appreciate the clarifications, since I read that reply and had a serious, "Hunh? What? But I didn't..." moment.

And yes indeedy! New stories, new crew, new setting, that's what I've been and will continue to hope for. And, I think that going back in the Prime timeline to any other period, while possibly interesting (certainly works in the novels!) is ultimately a bad idea. Trek should move forward.

The basic formula shouldn't be all that hard to figure out. A starship, preferably named "Enterprise" with an interesting and varied cast of crew, go out and explore the universe, finding strange worlds--etc. Throw in the occasional Romulan/Klingon/Cardassian/Borg--whatever, to link it to previous incarnations. But definitely something NEW!

Since the JJverse isn't going anywhere anytime soon, I do at least hope that future movies don't go back and rehash (and probably ruin) original TOS characters & stories. Give us something NEW, something completely different, and even I might have to mutter and pull my collar up as I buy the damn ticket.

I was rooting for this movie from day one. While guardedly optimistic, my one big fear was that it would be Star Trek: 90210. Happily that never happened, IMO. We got a fine film, tons of new fans, and a rekindled interest in TOS. I couldn't be any happier......

I didn't get exactly what I wanted out of Star Trek. I wanted a complete, total, shameless, unapologetic reboot, with no nonsense about alternative universes and the like. I'm glad the film succeeded, because at least now Paramount can feel comfortable doing a future reboot.

The movie wasn't perfect, and I wasn't expecting a great SF storyline. It was still more fun than Star Trek has been in years. I hope for the next reboot Paramount sees fit to hire some real SF writers.

I don't imagine that the deaths at the beginning were aimed particularly at impressing "old timers." I say this having watched the audience reactions at several showings, after having seen younger friends react very strongly to the whole Kelvin sequence the first time I watched the movie. The opening of the story really gets to some people - I've seen a few folks in tears - and it doesn't matter seem to matter whether one knows anything about Trek or not.

But then, that's what good stories are like - if you have to be invested in the thing beforehand (that is to say, if you have to be a fan) for the story to have an emotional impact, then it's not much of a story.

Now, Amanda and Vulcan - well, if one cares about Spock one probably cares about Amanda. Vulcan, though...Vulcan being destroyed is just Trekkie stuff; it's a nonexistent place and who cares?
