Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

I had a genuine windows 7 computer.

The get windows 10 app was not on my computer at the time.

I download the media creator tool and choose upgrade.

Tells me I should have a product key for windows 10.

Apparently only generic key's are being issued so I find a generic key for windows 10.

I plug the generic key in and wait for it to complete windows 10 install

Once it's all done I see that windows 10 is not activated.

I look at the other computers I have. They all have the same generic key.

I roll back to windows 7 and try to clean install windows 10 through an ISO

I can skip the product key part now. Windows 10 gives me the generic key but it's still not activated.

Go back to windows 7 again! I do windows 7 updates and try to push the get windows 10 app reservation

Two days later windows 10 is ready to install.

I have windows 10 now and the generic product key is activated

I got tired of waiting so I used the media creation tool. It was incredibly easy to use, and the update went perfectly. Everything was carried over; files, settings, installed programs. Everything seems to be working ok, too. Not a single issue. :techman:

No issues here either so far.. People on my home forum are complaining about constant issues with updates and i haven't seen a major issue so far.

Minor ones have surfaced but were easily fixed...

I just did a backup today and all went well but I got this screen before the backup started.

It was a pop up that happened twice. The backup actually started before it appeared for a 2nd time.

A new insider build was released last night.

Some discussion of it here.

Having a quick look via google seems to be a common error with windows 7 backup which Win10's backup is built from.

It seems that the app is expectig the previously created backup to be present and hasn't found it so throws up an error. Change the settings and you're probably off and running but a websearch will confirm that for you.

If you want an alternative, Paragon provide a free version of their backup software which works quite well and have used it on both Win8 and Win10 without issue.

Was able to install it with very little trouble. I did get the flashing screen of doom the first time. Son did something and fixed that bit...seems it conflicted with the version of Nortons I had. We simply upgraded that and it worked. So far no problems.

Thanks for that. It's a strange one. The backup worked flawlessly with no missing files yet I got that message when I started it. Anyway it worked that's all that I am really worried about.

I found this in the EULA..

For those concerned over privacy issues it might alarm you. I'm also in two minds on this..

'We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services,'

I said this in another thread, but Chrome seems to be the only browser that can still do most things well on Windows 10.

I love Firefox, except for it's slower-than-molasses speed, and it's inability to play video without jerking and stuttering. I remember when Firefox was pure awesome. For me, it isn't anymore. It's not like I love Chrome, it's a decent browser, but it lacks some of the features I love about Firefox. What I need is the speed and video ability of Chrome, with the stability and versatility of Firefox.

I tried Pale Moon, and used it for a long time, thinking I found the answer, but now I'm finding it can't render secure pages very well without screwing it up. I've lost transactions, can't access some bill pay websites, and I don't know why. I let the people at Pale Moon know, but I doubt they'll get to it any time soon. In the meantime, I have to go elsewhere.

Opera's a fast and lightweight browser, but it's a pain in the ass with the limitations it has on users modifying it (passwords, bookmarks, extensions, home pages, all work differently in Opera). The new Edge browser kicks a lot of ass, but it has a poor Bookmarking system, and no ability for add-ons.

So where do you go? The major browsers hold the market, and they're all flawed, some oddly so. No wonder people have multiple browsers, it's so they can do everything they need to do. Too bad there isn't one browser that does it all.

I just purchased a new screen but it's only HDMI ..
Noticed it has a headphone port on the back of the screen. That's unusual. Never seen that before..

I have external speakers running so does that mean if I use the HDMI port it will cut off the speakers because of the audio on the screen?

Also has a power brick.. Are they doing away with internal power supplies now?

That audio port is likely for your sound card, so you can plug the audio cable from your PC to your monitor. It means you likely have internal speakers with the monitor.

It shouldn't affect your audio to the speakers. Probably. Your monitor sounds weird, to be honest. I don't know of monitors that only have HDMI and no VGA/DVI ports. Even most HDTVs have VGA ports on them.

A power brick? Really? That doesn't sound right. Monitors have used the same basic power cable for decades. Something doesn't sound right.

If you could tell me, what is the make and model of your monitor?

Samsung SE390 and I didn't look more there is a VGA port

But the monitor has a 12 volt socket and power brick. I'm just wondering if this is common or not..

I'm sure they exist, it's just that the thousands of monitors I have seen in the decades I've been working on them have always had this:

And nothing else.
