Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

How in the world did that happen? I don't know if you answered this before, but did you have either Windows 7 or Windows 8 before upgrading?

I have no idea myself but I used the official MS download link so not sure why that is there...

Can anyone else check their update screen as well?

You'll find the screen I had in update history

I checked mine, and yeah, that's apparently normal. I have a fully activated, licensed copy of Windows 10, so it's just the way they worded it.

Just an FYI in case anyone finds themselves in this situation-

As you may have read earlier, I had to do a clean install of Win 10 after my SSD containing an upgraded installation from Win 7 failed.

Predictably, I was a bit concerned that when I installed Win 10 to a different drive, it wasn't activated, and I had no product key with which to activate it (earlier product keys won't be accepted). I saw information suggesting that Win 10's activation was based on hardware configuration, but nevertheless mine wouldn't activate.

Turns out that because I originally had Win 7 Pro I'd been upgraded to Win 10 Pro, but not realizing that (because I originally had Win 10 for under a day) I hadn't installed the Pro version. From the activation screen, there's an option to go to the MS Store, and from there you can upgrade to Pro. I did that without any great expectations, and to my surprise and relief when my PC finished installing updates my Win 10 copy was updated to Pro and activated.

Would have been nice if MS had made this a more clearly defined situation, but at least there's a solution.

^^^ This makes me want to upgrade not at all. Microsoft is notorious for this nonsense. Thx for the heads up...

My parents just upgraded really easily, barely even needed my input. If you knew my parents you'd know this is a minor miracle.

If my SSD hadn't failed (and I unfortunately have no way to say whether that's related to the Windows 10 upgrade), then the biggest issue I would have had would have been with my ethernet card's Win 7 driver not working under Win 10, which was to be sure annoying, but I would have gotten over it. That there was nothing in place to check such an important piece of hardware's compatibility is, I think, a bit short-sighted (not sure what I would have done if I didn't have another computer), but again, a year later I probably wouldn't have remembered it had happened.

As it is, it appears increasingly unlikely that I'll be able to salvage anything from the SSD, and more annoyingly, currently my external backup drive isn't being recognized when powered on...or when it is, it isn't being recognized with the correct partition table.

Why is the recovery partition 450mb in size?

I made a recovery disk from control panel using a USB and that was 3.97gb in size..

I am just curious what they put on the partition and what exactly is on the USB now? Is it a whole new install disk?

Because the recovery partition on the drive may just hold enough to boot a recovery environment and restore from backup.

What's on the USB drive would be a copy of the install media so that if you can't restore the computer you can reload Windows completely.

As to the issue a few posts up about the different verison (not loading Pro when should have) think this is a braindead decision by Microsoft.

In the past they've generally had one install media whether it was home or pro. The version would be decided by the product key you entered. Dunno why they had to go a change it - even with the free upgrades, the installed could easly have determined if a pro or home version was required.

Or post-install it could have simply said something along the lines of "You previously activated a copy of Windows 10 Pro. Click here to upgrade to Pro." or something similar.

I had a look at the USB...

On the USB are 3 folders

Boot
Efi
Sources

3 files

bootmgr
bootmgr.efi
reagent.xml

The 3 folders come to a total of 3.97gb in size.

in the sources folder you'll probably find there's a file called install.wim (or something similar) which will account for most of the space used.

It's the image file from which the installation takes place. The others just get things started.

So NOT happy right now. I noticed something as I was checking Windows Update for new updates.

It looks like it was trying to update my Windows 7 computer up to Windows 10 Home edition... without me wanting to do it.

THAT is not good at all! Almost like it went full-on malware worm on you. I just tried to do an update on my Win7 box last night. I should go back and see if any of these little bastards popped up on me.

Exactly. Was thinking similarly. And I'm not alone. Someone on another forum I'm on whose computer is on 8.1 ran into a similar situation. Luckily the updates that were on last night were NOT those, just normal ones. Thankfully. But I'll be double checking like usual from now on. I don't want my computer to get f'd up because of Microsoft trying to bully their new software onto my computer.

Edit: Wrong... it tried to do it AGAIN!

:scream:

Windows, I do NOT want to update to 10. There's a reason why I haven't done it. I've never updated OS's before. This is new territory for me. I'll be taking my laptop in most likely to have it done, aside from backing my laptop up, I'm inexperienced in this area. Will be doing the same for my mom's laptop.

That is the upgrade prompt - Windows does not automatically update to W10.

For Developers : The upgrade on my laptop completed without any problems. But later I noticed I could not connect to TFS 2013 Express which is installed on it. Tried many things to repair it but failed.

Downloaded the full Win10 Home ISO and did a clean install. Everything still worked afterwards. Installed VS 2013 and TFS Express. Can connect without any problems. But could not install Tools for SQL 2012 Express. I enabled .NET 3.5, because it's required. But the tools still didn't install. So did another clean install. Enabled .NET 3.5 feature. Installed SQL 2012 Express with tools. Installed VS 2013. Installed TFS 2013 Express. Everything is working again.

That one I think we can put down as general MS problem rather then a Windows 10 one.

Seen it a number of times over the years.
