Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

The easiest method to update now is to open the windows 10 notification and on the first screen click "more info" near the bottom. That will give you the option to update now even though you have not yet received a notification to update. I did that this morning and it worked without fault.

How so? Did you agree to use a product that's obviously still got a few bugs and where third party support like drivers is not covering some areas?

Given that you have to confirm at several points that you wish to install the product (including agreeing to Microsoft's Terms & Conditions) that removes any involutary component.

Secondly device drivers are not microsoft's responsiblity. If a driver isn't ready it is the fault of the device manufacturer.

Incidently it's the device drivers that come from the different manufacturesrs that have caused of many problems with Windows over the years.

I call that being a beta tester without MS actually declaring it as such.. they know they will have bugs and they are using this and covering their ass by not having an official, traditional release through stores and such.

Microsoft had the beta testing with various builds come out since mid/late last year.

As with every OS so far the start will be buggy and it has always caused some bad blood until a few weeks/months later before it's sort of stable and well enough supported. Now they have found a way to get out as clean as possible by making it appear that MS is giving it away freely and people are less likely to complain loudly if they get something for free.

Other than some self-inflicted issues and a lack of a software update from one vendor (they say mid-August) Windows 10 is stable, performing well and taking up less space on my drive than Windows 8.1.

Got the notification on my 5 years old laptop which runs Windows 7 Home Premium..

It's only a dual core 1.8ghz machine with 4 gig ram so how would that go with windows 10?

Also howcome today that's still considered an acceptable spec for a laptop? Isn't it a bit on the slow side?

I don't know about how Windows 10 will work on that laptop, but 1.8 GHz 5 years ago isn't as fast as 1.8GHz now. CPU technology has come a long way since that. Smaller dies mean that you can increase the performance by packing in more transistors on the chip, instead of making the transistors run faster.

I get that but when you see the specs in a store the first thing I think is WTF? That's my machine at home...

But I'll take what you said onboard they may well be faster then my current machine..

a 1.8GHZ I-3 chip is not as fast as a 1.8GHZ I-5 chip. The devil is in the details.

The laptop I have had a dual core centrino..

That's heartening to know that the laptop may run better then it does now. It's great on Win 7 if a tiny bit slow sometimes so I am feeling hopeful thanks guys.

My old computer died just as Windows 8 was being rolled out, and I had no choice but to take it when I bought my current laptop, which wasn't top of the line three years ago by any means. The upgrade to 8.1 helped some but not much, but now with 10 it's running faster than it ever did before.

Maybe M$ finally learned something from previous upgrades and saw the light at last, there's no need to bloat the OS to the point that it forces people to upgrade their computers just to run the OS at an acceptable speed. That won't increase PC sales, it'll just make people stick with the older versions of the software for as long as they're being updated. Or switch to alternatives, such as Linux...

If you change language and region to US suddenly purchasing movies from the store becomes a problem. It asks for a US address and doesn't acknowledge any stored credit card details..

That's true.....

Installed W10 on my desktop overnight. Wasn't at all thrilled to find that apparently my ethernet adapter's driver was no longer compatible, so I had no net access when all was said and done....so of course I couldn't update the driver.

Fine, I have a laptop.

Copied the driver onto an SD card...which the desktop wouldn't recognize. Adding insult to injury.

Finally copied the driver to a portable drive which the desktop recognized, and all was well as far as internet access. Not sure what happened with the SD card, but I don't really care right now.

I upgraded 3 laptops and a desktop to Win10 and so far no problems. The stupid charms bar is gone, and that's good enough for me.

If there's one thing I don't like about Windows 10, it's the visual style. My windows look fresh out of Windows 3.1. You can modify the colors, but it changes everything. The visual style, at least for the windows themselves, is a step back, I feel. For example, when I change the appearance of my browser, no matter what color I change it, the _ [] X control options in the upper right hand corner remain the same color as the current Windows theme. So a black theme for Firefox gives me black, and then a poorly cut out block of some other color that clashes with the theme. Also, when you change the color, those control options remain black like text, so the darker the color, the more likely it is you won't be able to see them.

I'm hoping some solid visual styles come out for Windows 10. I'd love to keep the visual style of 7, personally, as it had the nicest contrast and colors, I think.

CORTANA

I am sad as she's now stopped working. I ask it to say tell me a joke or such and it doesn't speak any more, just pops a search result.

Is that service down or something?

Cortana will not answer sometimes if your internet connection is very slow, as it requires her to pull more data from the backend, and she's optimized to give you results fast. So if she can't speak, she'll just show you the results.

There's also the change she just didn't fully understand you. Sometimes, when she's not quite sure what you want, she'll show the most relevant results, hoping your answer is there.

Then there are times where she simply doesn't answer in favor of just giving you results, though that doesn't generally happen on the social side of things.

Yeah, I don't think much to the visual style either. The personalization options are sorely lacking. I also installed a Win 7 start menu as I can't be arsed with that Metro crap. :techman:
