This is kind of a tangent to this discussion, but the Pentagon has a rank insignia page for officers and another for enlisted personnel.
But those US things have NOTHING on some of our foreign military friends.
Check out the sleeve-born braid of a few admirals out there. Some really go overboard, with two or three different types of braid in multiple widths. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Admiral .

Ahhhh, yes. Captain Oog Neanderthal. He on five-year mission to make fire and wheel!
Well, I always thought for TOS admiral braids, it would've worked to use the thick gold braid and build from within it. For example, you could have a broken stripe in the middle of the braid to signify a rear admiral, then a complete braid for a vice admiral, then a thick braid like the border braids for a full admiral set in the middle, while the commander, starfleet could have a star above the the thick braid. -- RR

Spock. We just received our new orders from the admiral. We're to "go in our metal bird and beat enemies with stick".

The only problem I see with that is it's pretty low-contrast, you'd have to be right up close to the officer to tell a rear admiral from a full admiral. And it would be harder for civilians than simply counting stripes. Admirals like everybody to know how important they are, and they're the ones that make the uniform rules!
