Did a admiral ever show up on tos?

I guess it's a good thing North Korean military couture isn't employed in the fictional world of Starfleet. No captain would be allowed on the bridge without fifty medals hanging from their chests.

Not too gawdy

Well, I always thought for TOS admiral braids, it would've worked to use the thick gold braid and build from within it. For example, you could have a broken stripe in the middle of the braid to signify a rear admiral, then a complete braid for a vice admiral, then a thick braid like the border braids for a full admiral set in the middle, while the commander, starfleet could have a star above the the thick braid. -- RR

The only problem I see with that is it's pretty low-contrast, you'd have to be right up close to the officer to tell a rear admiral from a full admiral. And it would be harder for civilians than simply counting stripes. Admirals like everybody to know how important they are, and they're the ones that make the uniform rules!

You have a point. You could always just put stars in the gold band to save space on the sleeves, too. -- RR

I've always kind of liked one conjectural system I've seen for TOS admirals.

Rear admiral - as commodore, with an extra stripe across the middle of the gold mesh.
Vice admiral - as RA, with a stripe above the other stripes.
Admiral - as VA, with two stripes above the other stripes.
Fleet Admiral - As admiral, but with gold mesh between all five stripes.

Here's another possibility, although it was never seen in TOS:

Captain - non-flag rank, same as seen in TOS
Fleet Captain - lowest flag rank, one step above captain, with one thick solid band bordered by braids
Commodore - equivalent to a US rear admiral, with the fleet captain's thick band and one "dotted" braid stripe above
Vice-Admiral - a fleet captain thick band, and one solid braid stripe above.
Admiral - a fleet captain thick band and two "dotted" braid srtipes, one above and one below
Fleet Admiral - a fleet captain thick band with two solid braid stripes, one above and one below

FASA made the interesting suggestion in their RPG that fleet captain was actually above commodore, although it's traditionally been assumed to be between captain and commodore. There were only ever a few fleet captains in service at any time, and their job was to oversee the development of new lead design classes like the Galaxy class. In the system I mentioned above, fleet captain has three solid stripes. The RA insignia could this be seen as a variant.
