Did a admiral ever show up on tos?

...Which isn't all too different from the barely glimpsed TOS version where the single broad "Commodore'ish" swath of material stands in for the three closely joined TMP strips. Or from the ENT version where closely woven silver braid creates the broad swath, and a colored stripe then separates a further silver braid or several.

All in all, it very closely matches the USN/RN way of doing things, even though Starfleet apparently doesn't place all the narrow strips of higher flag ranks on the same side of the broad "Flag" swath.

I seem to recall that Gene didn't want some of the ranks to appear too close to their real naval counterparts, because it would look too militarized. That's why captain had a half stripe between two solid stripes instead of four solid stripes.

...Also, the golden sleeve would have looked really busy with those four stripes spaced as far apart as the TOS Commander ones. Today's dark blue uniforms with more closely spaced braid are handier in that respect.

Basically, TOS Captain is the one exception from the "USN minus one braid" standard, a bit like most anthropomorph comic books follow the "minus one digit" standard when depicting the hands of the characters because that's easier on the eye. And TNG does away with the "minus one" with its pips.

Relic from the distant past - here is an ASCII visualization of a Star Fleet Admiral from a Star Trek computer game I used to play back in the late 1970's. Yes, that figure is indeed supposed to be a person's face. I think the horizantal lines that appear on his shoulders are supposed to be rank braids.

That particular Star Trek game is can be downloaded from online, although you need an emulator to play it. There also was an ASCII drawing of an original series Klingon that was pretty good. If you ran into a Klingon ship during combat, the Klingon would appear on screen and say "Watch where you are going you turkey!"

Hopefully someone else has a better copy of the bloopers than this poor one, but here's the best I could do:

With the light catching the braid differently on the right side of these frames, you can put together a reasonable mental image of what it looks like. As described at Memory Alpha (thanks to Red Ranger for the pointer): "a wide gold band (as worn by commodores), with a single solid rank stripe above and beneath it."

Here’s a better picture. It clearly shows the two braids above and below the wide braid

Ok new to this. Here is a good picture of admiral Fitz Patrick it clearly shows one wide braid and one braid on top of the wide braid and one braid below
