A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Diamond Select Toys has released their list of exclusive toys for next month’s San Diego Comic Con. For Trek fans, look for...

Ugh...another repaint ... and super ugly (IMO), too. They should slap a big General Lee flag on this one. If they really wanted to impress, it should have been more than just a new paint job, but damage the primary hull in such a way as to make it look more accurate, since half the saucer was blown away by the time it went down in flames. :sigh:

And for some reason, there are 2 threads on this.

After I saw this article, I tweeted them about the 'exclusive' and then emailed them and suggested if they did repurpose the model with 'damage' from the self-destruct, and possibly less orange, and streak it like the WOK battle damaged version, they'd certainly make more money.
I did want the comic con one as I've gotten every version of the Enterprise from them so far that isn't limited, and exclusive from a convention.
I'd like to see a Mirror universe 1701A refit, or have one painted like the MU one that was released.

I'm sorry, but this is an abomination and an insult to Trek fans and collectors.

It's a way to make a quick buck. No more, no less. And when nobody buys it for what it is, for what I'm sure will be an absurdly over-exaggerated price being a SDCC "exclusive", that's just one more justification for the out-of-touch suits at CBS/Paramount to not invest money in quality merchandising. It's just that kind of mentality that caused the fan-made unlicensed merchandise market to boom back in the 90's. The cycle continues and nobody learns from it...

Would it kill them to release Chapel and Rand like they teased almost a decade ago? Or better yet re-release the TMP/TWOK Enteprise with paint that light doesn't shine through like it's a cheap toy...

The really peculiar thing is that it's their second bite at this apple. IIRC, their first repaint of this design was a Search For Spock self-destructed version (which seemed to be going for "the second before the saucer blew up), with similar painting, minus the literally-on-fire paintjob.

Tom Sasser always had problems with Diamond Select "just not getting it" about battle damage. He showed me prototypes and ideas of how to do it with a small parts swap but Diamond Select would just shrug and say an altered paint scheme would do and was expensive enough.

THey did collect up all of his works in progress and references, paid his widow fairly well for them. I have no idea now who is working on the masters for them but apparently the mindset is still the same.

I expect to see a clear green TOS-E repainted as the USS Defiant trapped in Interphase space and a mottled beige and brown version repainted as the USS intrepid as having been digested by the giant space amoeba...

Another repaint? That's just lazy. Come up with a version with craters in the hull and the front end of the saucer blown away. I'll gladly pay $65 for that. But a version of the Enterprise that looks like a freshly picked carrot? I'll give you $3.99 maybe.

I'm all in favour of clever or cool repaints. A gold version, easily available rather than as exclusive for a single event on the other side of the planet would be welcome.

Johnny Lightning was hit and miss with their repaints, but their version of the exploding E was cutout.

However, I'm aware that Diamond Select can only use the same, unchanged mold.

I read a review that these ships were poorly made and were likely to break. Is this true?

I would absolutely love to get the TWOK Enterprise, but I don't want to shell out the kind of money to get one now if it's going to be crap.

I still say that the version presented here is an utter insult. It looks like a Creamsicle with some dirt on it.

I have one of the original ones and it's held up quite nicely for years. Never had a problem with breakage on any of their models. I could be an exception to the rule, though. Don't know.

That's why I asked. Thank you, I guess I will get one. :)

Can't always trust Amazon reviews.

I have several of the DST ships. (NX-01 reissue, HMS Bounty Bird of Prey, TWOK ENT, ENT B, ENT D, NEM ENT E) I've been buying them since they were issued by Art Asylum back with the NX01 during ENT's first run. (had to spray paint my phase pistol to get rid of that ridiculous orange tip, but that's a story for another time.)

The DST ships are great in terms of detail and quality, and both of these factors have improved drastically over the years. They have had some QA issues at times, (ENT - D missing neck windows on their first issue, the original NX-01 AA first issued was missing several decals including the yellow cargo bay decals on the saucer section - - which was corrected when DST reissued the nx-01 last year) but the ships themselves dont break and for the most part are great. The stands however are another story. I myself have a broken stand for my ENT D. I have heard DST is good about reissuing new stands for ones that break. I've never tried though....

I'm sorry, but this is an abomination and an insult to Trek fans and collectors.

I think that's probably a bit much. While I am not impressed either, I think it was a fun attempt at something different, and they just miscalculated a bit.

It's certainly not the greatest travesty ever to confront man.

You'll be pleased to know that the translucent green Defiant has been done.
