Depp turned down Freddie Mercury biopic?

Is it true that Johnny Depp turned down the role of Freddie Mercury in the upcoming movie about his life, and now Freddie will be played by

Sacha Baron Cohen
?

Looks like SBC turned it down too. Linky

Apparently the rumor got started when he appeared on the MTV Europe Awards (in character as Borat) and did a typically Boratish impression of Freddie.

Where do you get the idea that either of these actors turned the role down when there isn't even any evidence to suggest that either has even been offered the role?

All that article says is an "unidentified source", i.e. the tea boy at the Daily Mirror, said that Sacha was interested in it. You can't turn something down unless you are offered it though.

Brian May has only said that there are some really famous names being looked at for the role, he has never confirmed who any of them are. And if anyone would know, it would be Brian May.

I think Sacha might very well be the second best choice after one of the great actors of our time (Depp). Cohen has shown some serious acting chops and I think we've only seen the tip of the iceberg.

I'll take a wait and see attitude on this one. I just hope they play the band's actual recordings and not allow whoever stars, to do their own singing.

One last thing, if this story is true, Depp probably turned it down because of script problems (although money can't be completely ruled out or scheduling), and that seems a bigger problem to me than casting right now.

I took great pleasure in watching him being killed in Sweeney Todd

So far I haven't seen any evidence that a script even exists, or for that matter that either of these actors has screen tested or even been approached about the role. Its been all tabloid speculation based on one single comment by Brian May that a movie is "in the pipeline".

The SBC rumours have been floating around for a year at least now and there has been no official comment on whether this movie even exists since around that time either.

I think either choice would be good. Johnny Depp is unquestionably one of the greatest actors working today. He can do anything.

And Sacha Baron Cohen has shown a surprising amount of talent. He's not taken seriously because nearly everything he's done has been comedy. But I think he has the showmanship necessary to pull off Freddie Mercury. I can even see a certain physical resemblance. Only SBC & Mercury can pull off a bold mustache like that.

I am interested to see this go ahead out of curiosity, but for me, if there was ever one person who the term "inimitable" applies to, its Fred.

It'll take an actor of some extraordinary ability to convince me, Depp certainly qualifies, Cohen may well do I don't know, but it's going to be an uphill struggle for either of them.

Who wants to play the part of a man who had sex so many times it would make a prostitutes head spin? I remember watching a documentary about him and during the AIDS crisis when gay men were being told to stop sleeping around. He didn't listen. Thought that AIDS was something to do with bad air.

All though his music is rocking good. I'll dance to it while he's burning in hell.

Hello! Spoiler!

Just kidding...I'd say that would be an easy plot twist to predict. :D
the titanic sinks at the end of the movie as well, you know

You are obviously not well versed in normal sexual relations. You think that "having sex" too many times is a bad thing? That explains a lot.

Try actually having sex with someone, then it won't seem so scary to you.

Which documentary was that? The idiot's guide to AIDS? Yes, I should think you should watch that a few times ;)

Hell  Oh dear you people are so quaint.

What beef is that?

I wasn't aware that disagreeing with blatantly ignorant posts like "Who wants to play the part of a man who had sex so many times it would make a prostitutes head spin?" constitutes a beef as much as it constitutes upholding common sense.

What's YOUR beef with what i said?
