I agree the movie was much better off without those scenes. Interspersing three introductions (droids, Princess, Luke) is OK but pretty conventional; you know they will meet up at some point. But following the "nobody" characters, the droids, was pretty novel and I think made it more engaging and memorable (Though it was a
Hidden Fortress narrative idea that Lucas had played with from early on). Plus you're invested more in the droids when you don't know if this hell-hole desert planet is inhabited or what.
The dialogue and acting at Tosche station leaves something to be desired, too. As does Luke's hat.
It is likely the edit that removed most of Biggs scenes was very late in the process. Can't go back and reshoot those at that point.
Pretty late, I think all the principal photography was done, and they had to ask for extra funds to shoot the Greedo pickups when the Jabba scene was cut. Marvel needed a couple months lead time for the art, so the comics still had the Biggs and Jabba scenes.
I know what you mean about memory. I had the storybook and the original comics. Both of those contained a number of deleted scenes (including the original version of the Jabba scene I think) so sometimes I'm not sure if I actually saw something on screen or just read it in the comic.
Yeah. In the late '80s and/or early '90s I had discussions with two individuals on two different occasions who
swore they had seen Luke watch the space battle in the sky in the original release. To the point that one of them almost wanted to fight over it. Comics, novel, storybook, whatever, it was implanted strongly enough that they really thought they had seen it.
