Certainly an entertaining episode this week, but there are a few problems. As much as I like seeing Berlin back, her return is rather abrupt with no real explanation as to what happened between her and her boyfriend and now her and Irisa no longer hate each other. Umm, okay. Still, I guess now that Berlin is back we have the issue of who the lawkeeper is resolved.
And what is up with Amanda burning the corpse wearing Nolan's clothes, badge and dog tags? Yes, I know she doesn't want the VC to think she sprung Nolan thereby bringing down their wrath on Defiance, but I don't really think this ruse is going to work too well, either. But hey.
I did like the stuff with Datak hiring mercenaries to protect his house, especially since those mercenaries really are just in it for the money and have admitted that once their own lives are in danger, they're bailing. We also get a nice character moment between Stahma and Andina the servant. Apparently, Stahma is now trying to play matchmaker and set Alak up with Andina, who also seems to have some sort of feelings for Alak, too. Neither seem to know Alak and Irisa appear to be developing a relationship.
And so, Tev'gin is dead and Kindzy assumes full leadership over the Omec and wakes them from their stasis, thus setting up the remaining two episodes. When we saw the flashback was set in the 1970s a part of me thought "ooh, will Tev'gin have really thick sideburns and a pornstache?" Yeah, I know, it wouldn't have made sense, but it's where my mind went anyway. I liked it when Tev'gin and Kindzy start dancing and making out to Rocking Robin, and was kind of hoping that tune would play through the end credits. But Datak's constant moaning turned out to work so much better with the credits, I don't mind.
Finally, I noticed Rainbow Sun Francks listed in the guest credits. Where was he, and who was he playing?

^^^ They were in the Gliese 783 system, about 20 light years away from Earth when they picked up the "Rockin' Robin" broadcast. According to "Teh Wiki", the song was released by Bobby Day in 1958, and it would have taken that long relativistically (20 years, to 1978) for the signal to reach them there.
I guess they don't have FTL engines, but near-FTL engines that move at relativistic speeds for it to have taken them 70 years to get to Earth - according to the Defiance Wiki, their sleeper ship (the Tsuroz) arrives in orbit in 2048.

Looks like he was one of the bald male Omec the camera focused on as Kinzy pressed the wake up button.
I liked Stahma's line to Adina "you're very good at this" ostensibly about the weaving but really about Adina weaving her way up the liro ladder into the Tarr family.
OH YEAH!!!! I also saw him and was full of anticipation for his odd lameness with cool name.. and forgot about not seeing him.
I guess if that Omec is going to be in the next ep it makes sense he was one of the opening credits in this one?
I forgot about the scene with Stahma and Andina when I was posting my comments on the episode. That was great scene. Andina seems to be on her way to becoming Stahma's mini-me, even more than Christie.
But does Andina actually have feelings for Alak or is she just ambitious? As mentioned in the ep, marrying up is how smart Casti women elevate their social standing . . . .
Not only that but she was essentially entering an implicit agreement with Stahma to sneak her time with her grandson and help her win Alak back in exchange for her approval/assistance winning Alak. So much subtext in that conversation. It really was a strong scene.
Yeah, I can see that being the case.
Actually, it has less to do with SAG rules and more to do with how good his agent is. His agent could have milked the fact that Francks was on a Stargate series to get him billing in the opening guest credits.
Also, it depends on how the scene was filmed. If it were in fact filmed with scenes for next week's episode (possible, such things are common in TV shows) then he is getting paid for a speaking role, just in a different episode. This stuff can get really weird and convoluted.
True, Andina's endgame goal is likely elevating her status in Castithan society and fulfilling her own ambitions. Though it wouldn't surprise me to learn she does feel something for Alak, even if it is just loveless attraction.

There's one thing that's kind of bugging me. The Omec all appear to be played by black actors. I'm thinking it might just be because of the makeup, but it is still a little eyebrow raising.
Other than that, this was a pretty great episode. I was glad that they got the control stem out of poor Yewll.
I loved Datak's escape, I did not see the arm knife coming, but I love it.
That was a pretty great scene with Stahma and Alak. I'm honestly not sure if he was right about her motivation for coming to see him and Luke. She seemed genuine, but I don't know if I would totally put it past her to do exactly what Alak accused her of.
The end with the vet guy was great.
