Season 3 was the one season I missed as it wasn't on TV here, but only on Pay TV.

You should watch season 3, it was excellent.

Season 4 according to Kevin Murphy would have started in Defiance and ended up in space. It was supposed to be the proper final part.
Oh, so they had a plan to continue on from where season 3 ended? I guess it makes sense they would, though based on how perfect an ending we had for the series at the end of season 3, I was under the impression that the season 3 we got was a combination of plans they had for a third season (focusing on the Votanis Collective) and a fourth (focusing on the Omec). Certainly would explain why season 3 had much tighter story arc progression compared to the previous two.
Yes. I think once they got wind they'd be canned they wrapped up the story as best as they could, but it felt like they could have continued if they had been renewed from what I have read online, and seen in videos.
