Defiance Season 2 Discussion

So I guess each terraforming gizmo did something specific. That's how we ended up with the Notre Dame encased in ice and Germany a rainforest. What I don't understand is how these micro climates maintained themselves at such close proximity. I would have thought there would be a big freeze in France, a big vegetation and heat surge in Germany and then the ice would have started melting and the rainforests would have started cooling and stuff that wasn't compatible with those changes would die off.

I also don't get how if it mutated so many animals both alien and earth, smushing some of them together etc.. why weren't humans and Votans mutated?
Three words:

Video Game Logic.

You have to have different "zones" and easily polygonned monsters to make the game interesting, you see.

Whoever's idea it was to try and make a video game and a TV series in conjunction... just... I dunno. But it's Syfy, so who knows what the fuck those people are thinking.

Well yeah but in video games you go north to get colder zones. This is just all random.

So the nanites maintain the environment they are programmed to create. But I would assume that when this was done purposefully rather than randomly that would have a use by date. You wouldn't be creating a mini Votan jungle in the middle of Germany, you would be doing that in equatorial zones, after all the Votan vegetation and animals had taken over the area the nanites would eventually fizzle out because Votan life no longer needed a controlled habitat to flourish.

The preprogrammed spires did not hit where they were supposed to hit.

They did not hit logical targets, and the results were counter-intuitive bordering on stupid.

Clearly you don't play that many video games, especially MMOs. XD Try something like World of Warcraft, where you can go from rainforest to frozen wasteland in several areas, not to mention desert to swamp, lush forest to barren wasteland, and so on and so forth.

Yes I know, but my point was that the nanites wouldn't go on forever. They are there for the beginning to allow the vegetation and animal life the optimal environment to take hold. When they run out and stop maintaining their micro environments the world will turn into an even bigger cesspit for a while.

Many of those things are given geographical reasons. If you go from Tanaris to Ungoro you are descending into a Volcano ruin full of underground springs which allow vegetation to flourish in the heat. I admit the Northrend bit of rainforest is jolting. And yes obviously they are ALL stupid compared to the earth but as a generalization when you look at an MMO map north is icy and if it isn't there is an active volcano involved.

The nanites could be selfreplicating, or there could be a secret cabal with a rouge nanite factory making sure that the Votanforming sticks... But they have billions more Votans turning up in a century or two who are expecting the Votanforming to have been completed and be forever and it'll never regress back to Class-M no matter how many millennia they stay on Earth.

Some of the Votans don't breath oxygen. Were they going to get planet chunks that were zones they could breath in? Otherwise it seems the environmental needs of the other races are well suited to M class. I'm pretty sure their planets would have been labeled as such.

Oh god.

Arkfall wasn't about killing mankind.

It was about blinding him.

There's two really obvious things that the Votans will not want man to see.

1. The terraforming of the rest of the Solar System. Dozens of Moons = Earth.

2. The oncoming fleet. 10's of thousands of Ships with billions of Votans sleeping therein.

Blasted Lands to Swamp of Sorrows? Barrens to Ashenvale or Dustwallow? Feralas to (old) Thousand Needles or Desolace? Dun Morogh to Loch Modan? The list keeps going on and on...

There are geographical fauxsplanations for most of that. Mountains, etc.. but I'm not arguing with you that stuff wasn't done for the video game connected to Defiance. I haven't played it and I don't know if you can even go to France and look at the frozen Notre Dame. I'm trying to find in-universe explanations for the science dumb juxtaposition of microclimates. The spikes (which I'd forgotten about) explain it, I just don't think the nanite deal is set to go on forever. If they were planning to terraform a dead rock sure, they would need to have it set to self replicate. But they were looking for a planet that already had life and environment they could then alter into a replica of their own world.

When is this fleet supposed to show up?

I bet it is cancelled before it does

The first mention of it, that I noticed, was in Irisa's flashback last week.

Hell, I might even have misunderstood what I misheard, and there is no fleet coming.

But...

If who we have met are just a bunch of disposable transitory grunts intended to work the terraformers and build the earth into some place liveable for decent upstanding proper-minded Votans can show up to see a perfect world full of readymade cities...

Lower class scum who should heave been worked to death in mines and construction sites, with a few leader class types packed in for good measure to give orders and enjoying being in charge on the ground floor, when there's no chance that they would have been given this job if they came with the main bulk when there were thousands more of royals(?), eggheads and effective accomplished types above them in the pecking order.

These "aliens" are part of the extended terraforming machine as much as the spires.

Girl: They've barely crossed their oceans.

Boy: What about when the rest of the fleet arrives. 3000 years from now. Their world will advance.

Girl: Keseri was launched ahead of the arks to terraform a barren world. This is not a barren world.

Boy: How are we supposed to live there with aliens

Girl: Ersu values al life or have you forgotten. It's time we seized the ship.

Alllllrighty.

So this conversation was 3000 years old, happening above the Earth which was supposed to terraform the planet before the birth of Rome, and the oncoming fleet they were talking about was the Arks which arrived in 2013.

My bad.

No more Arks are coming. :(

Although it is nice to notice that a smaller ship can make the trip from Voltan to Earth in just 2000 years. :)

I also thought they were discussing another fleet approaching Earth in the flashback scene.

Fah. I've never played the online game and only go with TV canon and the stuff I've read from
Wikipedia. I realize Antarctica has been transformed into a habitable continent, but they have yet to show the locales.

And it seems if they were supposed to terraform a "barren world" the nanites will be on permanent self replicating maintenance.

That's interesting about who woke up first and why. I've noticed a lot of the older Castithan males seem very dweebish and submissive, maybe these were the stupid ones that were expected to make way for more of Datak Tarr's ilk.

No they were discussing the fleet that arrived in 2013, the flashback was aboard the Votan ship that had been buried under St. Louis/Defiance for the past 3000 years.

Watched the pilot again last night, noticed how video game a lot of scenes were which seems to be an element that's been dropped. There was also much more interesting vegetation than we've seen in a long time. Jaime Murray's performance has really been honed, she is more stylized and deliberate in her movements now, less human and more alien geisha. The Tarr's are both much whiter now too and Datak seems to have aged 20 years since the pilot!

Now, 90% of what Stahma says is BS, right? All that smiling and gentleness is big cover (most of the time), right?

If so, Jamie Murray is doing a brilliant job...it's got me guessing a lot.

And talk about a dysfunctional family! I hope Alak stay son the right path & doesn't give in.

It's bullshit. Or it's diplomacy. Or it's.. yeah she will keep you guessing. She is multi agenda'd. I'm very interested in finding out what she did with Kenya. She was supposed to kill her but she did not (I assume) whether from genuine feelings or..? Some advantage politically?

How long has it been since the season 1 finale now?

She will respect, and if you excuse the pun, get wet from being almost drowned by her dirty husband.

Seriously!

His feet!

No wonder they are fine with communal bathing if not one of them is ever actually dirty.

Although considering their powerful sense of smell, it makes sense that they have to bath together, so that they all smell the same, or keep scrubbing until they stop offending each other.

I think she will be machinating a fine workaround to deal with Datak's return.

That was so creepy when she was smelling out Kristie's pregnancy
