DC to REBOOT???

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #1 from writer Dan Jurgens and artist Aaron Lopresti.
Dan "Turgid" Jurgens on JLI? DOES THIS MEAN THE LONG-AWAITED RETURN OF BLOODWYND?

Seriously, that's kind of crap. I was hoping against hope that this would be what Giffen and deMatteis were doing after Booster Gold. I didn't really expect it, because no one actually bought Booster Gold, because comics people are weak and vile creatures.

(And in fairness, Maxima was actually kind of cool.)

Anyway, after having thought about this for a while, I've come to make the following ovservations:

1)It's personally annoying that cape comics publishers are trying for new readers because of an aging/dying audience, despite the fact that our best actuarial science indicates that I won't meet the Black Racer for some forty years;

2)The DCU does in fact have a lot wrong with it, and so I understand why a reboot may be necessary or at least desirable--HOWEVER, almost everything that is wrong with the DCU has been inflicted upon it by the very same people who are now set to recreate the universe. While usually you want people to pick up after themselves, you don't task serial arsonists with cleaning your house.

3)It is absolutely true that DC doesn't owe me, personally, jack shit. They wouldn't even if I bought their entire line every Wednesday, but I have even less standing to really complain. I buy Secret Six and I bought Action Comics and I bought one more issue of Booster Gold than I meant to because Dan Jurgens caught me by surprise. And I buy trades of things I might be interested in. But overall, I am a very bad comic book buyer. So I cannot quite hate them.

However, like Pilate, I can wash my hands of the whole sorry mess.

4)That Jim Lee JLA cover is one of the most hideous images I've ever seen to headline a marquee comic. Good Lord. In fairness to Lee, it's mostly the coloring, but the blocking and the linework is not exactly "good" either. Also, I know backgrounds are boring, Jim, but when you're one of the top artists in the industry, and trying to push to the civilians, do you really have a valid excuse for that?

5)What happened to Grant Morrison, man? The Invisibles? The Filth? Hell, JLA was fun. The guy used to be cool. Now he wants to ruin Superman. All-Star was the shit, granted. All-Star was a self-contained story. No one wants to read Watchmen: The Adventures Continue. Why would anyone be excited about a Grant Morrison Superman?

However, in addition to that big shocker, in the fine print they say how they are 'tweaking' storylines, characters, and designs with a '21st Century' mentality? What the hell does THAT mean? Every comic book is starting over with modern 18 year olds? What the hell?

My interpretation was that they were simply giving these characters slightly younger and fresher outlooks, and not weighing them down with so much experience and continuity as before.

I mean, a lot of characters like Supes and Batman may still be drawn as if they're in their mid-30s, but their personalities often seemed to reflect someone who's been around MUCH longer than that (because, well, they have).

Alan Moore would probably hate that.

I have a vague theory--I don't really believe it, but it's fun to entertain--that Johns is now deliberately desecrating Alan Moore concepts, as a form of revenge against the old man for some comments a few years back, along the lines of "that guy whose name I can't remember can't do anything but recycle my old ideas."

Like I said, probably not true, but it's enjoyable to imagine Johns writing Brightest Day and shouting aloud to no one in particular, "Fuck you, grandpa, I don't need any 'Anatomy Lessons' from you!"

Maybe he saw Liefeld's success and wondered why he was busting his ass when any old shit will sell?

What old idea of Alan Moore's did Geoff Johns recycle again?

I don't know if "recycle" is the right word, but from what I understand a lot of the recent Green Lantern mythos.

Liefeld has success?

At the time, not very much--Tales of the Green Lantern Corps concepts, like Mogo, Sodom Yat, the Five inversions, Blackest Night. Alan Moore was almost certainly commenting in ignorance, and being not a little bit of a dick. At the time, Johns was doing nothing but building on some of Moore's ideas, which of course is hardly dissimilar to what Moore did with, oh, every damned thing he's ever written.

Which is why I can see why Johns might've been pissed off, but was too diplomatic and/or well-positioned to just tell Moore to go fuck himself, ala Jason Aaron. Why insult someone in a blog when you can, with a little planning, eviscerate a man's art?

But like I said, I don't think this is really the case. It's just fun make-believe. Alec Holland is alive and John Constantine came back to the DCU for no more an interesting reason than Johns likes to rejuvenate intellectual properties that may at some point become profitable and/or fun for him to work with. Johns isn't actually evil, you see, just misguided.

If Johns ever did something with the Watchmen characters, though, I might actually come to believe in my own paranoid fantasy.

(Now if Morrison does it, it's because--as I understand it--Morrison actually does have a long-standing antagonism with Moore--at least on a professional level--which, while very much self-hype on Morrison's part during his formative years, is real.)

Gail Simone, currently of Secret Six and Birds of Prey, and the just announced Firestorm posted her thoughts on this event as a creator and a fan.

Let me point out why I'm excited about this movement at DC. I also need to say that I am not an apologist, nor is DC even aware I am writing this. These are just my thoughts as both a writer for the company and as someone who dearly loves the DC Universe above all things including dogs and self-respect. You may completely disagree, but I think this is going to be one of the most exciting times in history to be reading comics. Yes, really.

It's a great read to get a little perspective on the news.
